POLL FOR 3D READY DLP HDTV OWNERS ONLY!!!

Over 4 million 3D ready DLP HDTVs were sold in the US alone. 3D ready DLP HDTVs are capable of producing a very good 3D picture but are only compatible with the 3D Checkerboard Format. It does not appear that the current generation of equipment used by Satellite and Cable providers is capable of generating a 3D Checkerboard Image. Additionally, as of now the only 3D Blu-ray players that generate a 3D Checkerboard signal are those manufactured by Panasonic. Samsung, one of the largest manufacturers of 3D ready DLP HDTVs has apparently abandoned their customers by not including the 3D Checkerboard as an option on their 3D Blu-ray players.

Mitsubishi has announced plans to manufacturer a 3D Checkerboard Converter but has announced that the device will only be compatible with Mitsubishi DLP HDTVS due to EDID restrictions that Mitsubishi will be imposing on the converter. There is some concern that as a result of Mitsubishi's actions the converter may not be compatible with some A/V receivers. Additionally, the converter will only have one video input / output which may be a problem for some users who have multiple 3D video sources.

The ideal converter would have no EDID restrictions and offer at least two HDMI inputs. Please feel free to share any other specifications which you believe would be important in your comments.

I have not defined what a reasonably priced 3D Checkerboard Converter is as I believe that it would be better to receive input from my fellow AVS members regarding the price range.

If you intend to buy the Mitsubishi 3D Checkerboard Converter then you should vote yes to this poll. Hopefully, someone will make a solution for owners of Samsung 3D ready DLP HDTVs or make a device that is superior to the Mistsubishi Converter for all 3D ready DLP HDTV owners.

Thank you for your input and for participating in this poll

Still can't believe samsung isn't bothering to release a converter. Or anounce an intention. Or include checkerboard output on their overpriced BD player. What a truly, crappy, crappy company.

I voted yes, but I would need a converter that would also scale the signal, or output the signal at 1360 x 768. I've the Samsung plasma that only works in 3D when receiving a 1360 x 768 video signal.

Which model Samsung Plasma do you have?
How do you feed it 3D content at 1366x768 today?
I am not aware that a standard for 1366x768 Checkerboard even exists that the output could be scaled to.

A great set the Samsung HL67A750

My mom works for Sony, and she brought home a copy of "Starhawk BETA"
I quickly slipped it into my trusty PS3, and started playing.

What is the best way to contact Samsung to encourage them to make one?

I believe our best hope is for a 3rd Party Manufacturer to come up with a 3D Checkerboard Converter. I have little faith in Samsung to do the right thing.

Is there a difference in picture between the 61 and 67? I have the HL61A750 as the HL67A750 was too large to fit in my entertainment armoire.

Basically the pictures are the same on both Samsungs. The settings are a little different because I have different firmware (newer firmware on the 61"). I would still like to tell Samsung how pissed off I am on their not producing a converter box. If an acceptable solution is not available I will not be buying any more Samsung products. Aside from the two DLP sets I have a 23" Samsung 1080p TV (kitchen) and a 27" and a 22" Samsung monitors.

i feel upset also the way samsung has left us stranded without any converter or even a blue ray player.they sure are alienating a lot of people who purchased these sets.i will keep this set until it is finished and when i purchase a new set i will be supporting another company.

I have the Samsung PN50A450 Plasma. It's a 50 inch 720p plasma (actually 1360 x 768 native ). Apparently, the 3D mode will only work if fed a 1024 x 768 or 1360 x 768 resolution. Obviously, this is extremely limiting. I bought this Plasma in November of 2008. At that time, the 3D support was just a bonus for people that might want to PC game in 3D at a 1360 x 768 resolution. They didn't take into consideration what the future would hold with 3D satellite broadcasts or 3D Blu Ray.

The only device compatible with it besides the PC, is the Xbox 360. An Xbox 360 with a HDMI output is able to output it's video signal at the native resolution. I have played the two "legit" 3D games on Xbox 360, Avatar and Invincible Tiger on it. Both games look pretty good in 3D, despite the half-rez image that I'm getting. Hopefully, there will be more Stereo 3D coming to the Xbox 360 in the near future. Maybe some announcements at e3.

Other than that, I'm pretty screwed. The Panasonic Blu Ray player won't work, because of the 1360 x 768 requirement. My only hope is via the PC. With a PC, I can set my video card to output 1360 x 768, and everything should work, but I need to run things thru the PC for it to work. Not an ideal situation.

Same here...I have seen 3D and found it very impressive. I would be more then willing to upgrade my current Samsung 67" LED TV. However, I am not willing to buy a new TV set just for 3D when my current set works so well.

To be honest, I'd rather they not even offer that. 1) It doesn't look good at all. 2) It'll only confuse the consumer, whether it's true 3D or converted 3D.

I could be wrong but I would imagine if we want the converter to do 2D to 3D conversion then we can forget about the converter having a reasonable price.

I think the Mits converter only comes as a kit with glasses so if it's $150 that's good for me.

Both flavors are to be available. Starter Kit Bundle, and a 3D adapter á la carte: http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/3D.html

I don't suppose they would sell a hacked one that would work on my Samsung HL61A750 3D ready LED DLP.

Mits has not yet announced the date nor the price for the kit. Or has it?
I'll buy the kit regardless.
Will Directv need a firmware update in order to receive its 3d signal?

You know what, screw Mitsubishi for doing this. They've never come out with anything to match my Samsung LED in price/performance, and I'll be damned if I'll ever invest in anything from them now or ever after this. Its one thing to completely drop a technology, like Samsung has. Do they have an obligation to give us a converter box? No. Would it be nice if they did? Yes. But TI and Mitsubishi allowing, and in fact in Mits' case FORCING my 2 year old set to be a 3D orphan when it was marketed as being 3D is B.S. They are going out of their way to break it. Mitsubishi is the one that is still pushing DLP and all this does it put another nail in the coffin in RP DLP for them for future buyers.

Mits has not forced your TV to be an orphan. Samsung has.
I fully undersstand why Mits does not want to have to support the use of their adapter for use on DLP RPTVs that they have no control of.
Howeverr, I think it is totally stupid of then not to not license their adapter to another company which is willing to support its use on Samsung 3D ready DLP TVs.

I also have a Samsung 61A750 and I would also be more than willing to spend up to $150 for a converter.

Also, I agree with turls. There is no way to describe this other than malicious, especially considering that Samsung is no longer making a competing product.

I don't agree. They don't have to support anything. Of course the minute I call them and they determine I have a Sammy DLP they will hang up on me. That doesn't mean they have to force the issue with EDID.

Malicious is the perfect description of it, considering they are supposed to be the torch-bearer for RP DLP.
