I just got confirmation from Samsung that the new 2011 Plasma 3DTV series does not support checkerboard mode.
The new 2011 LCD 3DTVs still do.

So, it looks like I'll be replacing my 60 inch Kuro with last years Samsung Plasma after all.

Sometimes I feel like I'm talking to the wall.

At the moment I'm not feeling so thankful toward Samsung anymore.
I wish I could change the title of this thread to something like; "Frank's 3D adventure blog!"

Can someone recommend a reliable place to buy my Samsung PN63C7000s from?

I might have to buy a bunch of them since this will probably be the last plasma to support the all important checkerboard mode.

I was messing with checkerboard mode last night and the text on some screens had a shimmer to it which was kind of distracting. Is this a normal result of the aliasing or something else?

That happens to me occasionally with some fonts especially if you are using small fonts.

Oh Boy! After a lengthy conversation with a nice lady at Samsung I'm pretty sure that the new 2011 3D plasmas from Samsung do in fact support the all important checkerboard mode.......
Now if the new 64 inch would become available I'm ready to buy...

Frank,

Try Cleveland Plasma (an AVS Forum sponsor), they have the 64D8000 in stock. The owner posts here at AVS all the time over in the plasma and lcd forums. Call or e-mail for the best price.

Frank,

Also note that last years glasses will not work with the new D series because this year Samsung is going with bluetooth to sync the glasses. If you get the TV at Cleveland Plasma they throw in the new starter kit with the new RF glasses plus the 3D Blu-rays.

Thanks for the great info...I had no idea.
I couldn't care less about the 3D Blu-Rays. I wonder if I could swap them for more glasses?
How about a bluetooth to IR adapter so I can use my existing glasses?

I have no idea but you are the 3D mad scientist. If anyone can figure it out, you can!

You could always sell the 3D Blu-rays online and since they are exclusives to Samsung, I bet you could get a good amount of money for them.

I can not order the Samsung 64D8000 until I obtain confirmation that it supports checkerboard mode.
Despite my efforts, I have not been able to do so up to now.
Hopefully someone who actually has one can test it and confirm since Samsung seems unwilling to do so.

Thanks, but I was aware that this 6500 series does, but this is not proof that the 8000 series does.
I'm not willing to buy until I get confirmation that the 64D8000 works and so far I do not have it.

I would be shocked if they would not include it in their top of the line TV and include it on a lower line.

Me too, but I'd rather be shocked before ordering it then after installing it and then have to uninstall it, repackage it and return it.

Frank,

You should try posting your question over in the Plasma Forum. There are a couple Samsung DXXXX threads going.

Thanks for the compliment.

I'm having more and more fun with 3D every day as I think of more ways to take advantage of this undocumented feature of one 3DTV manufacturer.

I need to finish building my two camera system using a half reflection mirror that will enable me to reduce the interaxial distance down to almost nothing via remote control.
It's going to be very interesting to be able to see and document the hidden world outside.

By the way, I looked at your home theater build and am very impressed.

Frank's TOP 10 LIST!

This is my top 10 reasons why I now love 3D.
(all made possible by computer interfaced to checkerboard enable 3D television.)

Number 10: No 3D BluRay player required.

Number 9: Unconstrained distribution throughout the house with no new equipment required.

Number 8: 3D video can be resized to the most comfortable size.

Number 7: Multiple 3D windows on screen at the same time that can be maximized with a simple mouse click.

Number 6: Can watch multiple live 3D videos from anywhere.

Number 5: Play YouTube 3D videos exactly the same way as you've been playing 2D YouTube Videos.

Number 4: Single mouse click play of virtually any 2D and or 3D content.

Number 3: Any combination of 2D and 3D content on screen at the same time.

Number 2: NO HDMI 1.4X!!!!!

And the NUMBER ONE reason is:

Number 1: Can browse the AVC Forum while doing all of the above!

Frank,

I have read through the thread and I must say everything you have done here is very awesome / exciting. I now see the importance of checkerboard support from 3DTV. I have a PN51D8000 scheduled for delivery Monday and will revert soonest with a definite answer / picture. I hope someone will answer your question sooner because I know you are eager to pull the trigger.

In the meantime keep up the cool innovative work.

Thanks......
My understanding is that the new Samsung D8000 series plasmas do not support checkerboard anymore.

At least you know what you won't be able to do with your new Samsung when it arrives.

This means I'm still looking for a replacement for my Pioneer Kuro 60" that supports the only mode I ever use which is of course, "checkerboard".

After having calling Samsung and talking with them via "live chat," both have confirmed that the D8000 series will support checkerboard format. Add in that we already know that the D6500 series supports checkerboard, I think it's safe it's safe to assume that the D8000 series will also support it.

This is true for the LCD versions but I do not believe the plasma version of the D8000 supports checkerboard.

I specifically asked about the PN64D8000 (even included the word plasma) when I spoke with both sources. I think its time to go to Best Buy and see if I can find a remote for the PN64D8000 to do a final confirmation. I will take a picture of what I find.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they were mistaken.
I believe you won't be able to confirm with just a remote as the option will not show up unless a computer is connected to HDMI-1 and the label is set to PC.
Too bad there is no manual online yet as it would indicate whether the option exists or not.

I just tried something new today.

As if that was unusual...

I have two live 3D video windows on my 3DTV.
One is from R2D3 and the other is from my JVC GS-TD1. The JVC is connected to a HDMI to Svideo converter and then to a Svideo to USB capture device which is then opened by Stereoscopic Player and displayed as checkerboard.
I then remotely log onto both remote computers and watch both live real time 3D videos.
Nice!
