Does anyone know what theaters use for 3D? Do they use 2 projectors, a z-screen type set up (polarization modulator), or is it built all into a single projector or what? And how can I tell what theater use which one of these?

IMAX 3D uses dual projectors with polarized (linear) lens filters

RealD uses their Z-Screen polarized (circular) adapter on a single projector

Dolby 3D uses a “wavelength triplet” technique on a single projector - uses a white screen instead of the silver required for polarized 3D projection

What resolution do those 3D theater systems provide to each eye?

Lee- What is the best way to determine if a theater is using the Dolby 3D system. I'd like to go to one to see how it looks.
Also, do you know if there are any consumer projectors yet using this technology? I've seen a couple of the passive projector systems and aside from being quite expensive, none are yet ready for cinema quality in the home theater environment.

Hi Don:

Here is the Dolby 3D theater locator link from their website:

http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/content/movie/theater/find-a-cinema.html?ct=Dolby-3d

There is a system that uses Infitec (Dolby 3D) but it is VERY expensive. There is thread on it:

2048x1080.

Two different refresh rates are used:

IMAX 3D Digital uses 24 fps per eye

RealD and Dolby 3D use 72 fps per eye

The video compression codec used is the professional Motion JPEG2000 with a very high bit rate - like 250 Mbps

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

They may be showing 2D in 4K using the Sony 4K commerical projectors. There are a select number of theaters doing this. Christie, Barco and NEC are rolling out their 4K projectors this year. AFAIK though, the only 4K 3D theater in the USA is in my home town - ABQ, NM using twin 4K Barco projectors for a science museum presentation. Haven't had a chance to see it yet.

A lot of theaters use 4K projectors now. All the ones I go to do. It looks like the 3D is in 4K also. I can really tell when it is only 2K.

Lee, Finally got the Dolby map locations to work. It's been broke since. Seems the closest Dolby 3D to here is in Kings Bay Ga which is about an hour's drive. Nothing locally.
