First time poster, long time lurker.
I returned my HMZ-T1 yesterday at the Sonystyle Store as soon as I found out about the news of the HMZ-T2. The clerk wasn't aware about the announcement and quickly looked up the news on the intarwebz. I enjoyed the T1s but with the announcement of the T2, I decided to utilize Sony's return policy. Good thing I just bought those 2 weeks ago.
As for the new features, I'm mostly interested in using my own headphones. Over the years, I've been using the Olympus Eye-trek FMD-250w, which allowed for the use of my own headphones. The pics I've seen online show a headphone jack and it looks like the included headphones are removable. I was never a fan of the in-ear headphones and I'd like to be able to use my Sony Personal Field Speaker Headphone (PFR-V1), which I got for dirt cheap when they were discontinued. The headphones on the T1 were functional, but I like to keep my options open.
The display on the T1 blows away my circa 2000 Eye-trek. When I first tried the demo at the store, I was OMGWTF, MINE! Now mind you, I've been using the Eye-trek for the past 12 years and my main TV at home is still a 27" CRT. I have no recent comparison. After reading the reviews and trying to follow the AVS T1 threads, I bit the bullet and purchased the long overdue upgrade.
The only HDMI devices I have at home are my cable box, laptop and the Sony SMP-N200 Streaming Player. The Streaming Player worked beautifully and was surprised that it also does 3D. The Sony 3D channel was pretty neat to experience since I don't have any 3D media. Good thing I have the bandwidth to handle the stream.
As for using it on the laptop, I was blown away as well. I used to use the Eye-trek as a secondary display on my laptop for IRC in a terminal window at a very pixelated 640x480 + extra large fonts and with the T1, I could see my work clearly now as a primary display at a much higher resolution. Good thing I can touch type since I can no longer see the screen or keyboard on my laptop.
The Eye-trek is still functional and I mostly use them for tinkering with first person point of view on RC vehicles these days. I was able to put together a battery pack for portability. Not sure what kind of options I could come up with for T1/T2 portability.
I read a press release for the HMZ-T2 and it mentioned these features, which I think are also new:
Wireless remote controls– adjust sound and vision, and access the menu wirelessly without breaking from the action
Play while others watch TV – a dual output switcher means other people can watch TV or films while the wearer plays games (or the other way around)
I read the press release here:http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/sony-quietly-drops-new-hmz-t2-personal-3d-viewer-at-ifa/
Does anybody have further info or a list of all the changes? In the pictures, I noticed that the volume buttons are on the other side of the viewer, not below the menu. Also, the processor box is now HMZ-T2P. Does anybody know the difference compared to the HMZ-T1P box?
It was also mentioned elsewhere (can't find link) that the T2 is supposed to be release at the end of October. Can anybody confirm?
EDIT: Not sure how valid.
