Not sure if there is another thread on this, but are we going to need a specific "3D" blu ray player to support all these new 3D movies??

Yeah Sony developed "Blu-Ray"; however, IMHO, they are behind on keeping up with the technology and there products have a lot of bugs when they first come out. I still remember a couple of years ago where I had to get a Samsung BD-P1400 blu ray player because none of the Sony BDPs could stream all the audio codecs. Not to be a pessimist, but scared to see what problems this new line will carry.

Do these "3d" players just have more processing power? Will the PS3 also be able to have a firmware like the 470 and 570 to make it 3D capable??

No and Yes.
  • No, you won't need a new player to play a 3D movie in 2D (3D Blu-ray discs are compatible)
  • Yes, you will need a new player to play a 3D movie in 3D. (You need a Blu-ray player with the circuitry to decode the Left and Right images and send them to a 3D display over HDMI.
