PS3 3D Blu-ray update in September - 3D photo update to follow

Quote:

It has been revealed that the 3D Blu-ray update "available in the Fall" will actually hit consoles sometime in September. Additionally, that won't be the end of the 3D upgrades, as a further patch will arrive later to bring 3D photo compatibility to the machine.

PS3 3D Blu-ray update in September

Great news

My mom works for Sony, and she brought home a copy of "Starhawk BETA"
I quickly slipped it into my trusty PS3, and started playing.

I'm already looking at 3D photos from my PS3 on my 65" Panasonic, streaming from my computer (through TVersity) and they look fantastic. You could do the same thing from an SD card or USB thumb drive. So far i'm using side-by-side jpegs I picked up off the internet, resizing them to 1920x1080 and setting the Panasonic 3D menu to "side-by-side" rather than "auto". The Sony X-bar looks pretty weird, but the photos show great, I just use the Sony controller to go through them. Some of the photos had left and right images swapped, so I used the Panasonic 3D menu to "switch" them. My next step will come as soon as my Loreo (sp?) stereo adapter for my camera arrives from Hong Kong.

bigjohn, I had been viewing 3D photos on the VT25 via the PS3 as well. Likewise, the pictures are side-by-side JPGs and the VT25 had to be set to side-by-side mode. But I didn't have to resize the image to 1920x1080.

I created the photos myself using a single-lens camera. Nowadays, I just create the MPO files and put them on an SD card so the VT25 can display them directly in 3D, without using the PS3. The set does this automatically without me having to go into the VieraTools menu to switch the 3D viewing format.

While I eagerly await the 3D blu-ray update, I really don't need the 3D photo update since the VT25 can read the MPO files now.

Thanks for the info. DueN. The 3D pix I dl'd from the web showed "squished" people & objects and large black bars at top & bottom until I resized them. I haven't tried my own images yet, what image size are you using for your home-made pictures? Can you post a sample?

I totally agree on the 3dD Blu-ray update, I'm sitting here w/ "Cloudy with Meatballs" trying to be patient and not buy the Panny 3D player.

When I started taking 3D photo, I used a Canon point-and-shoot and set the image size to 1920x1080. I just put the stereo pair side-by-side giving an image size of 3840x1080. The VT25 will then display the images in full HD.

I also played around with DSLR and 4x3 aspect ratio. Then I'd get black bars on the side. After cropping, the size varies. I don't mind them though.

If you'd like to make 3D photos yourself, I highly recommend that you download (free) StereoPhoto Maker. I first generate anaglyph (red/bue) stereo images to evaluate/preview the results directly on the PC. Then generate the MPO files for viewing on the VT25.

I would upload a few MPO samples if I know where to put them. :-)

I just got my Loreo "3D Lens Cap" from Hong Kong; it took less than a week from the time I ordered it until it arrived at my door. I hooked the Loreo lens up to my Panasonic G1 camera body and took some photos. I followed your advice and dl'd Stereo Photo Maker, which I used to convert the jpegs from the camera to MPO's (batch processing made this really easy and fast), put them on an SD card and WOW! Beautiful, un-squished, correctly proportioned 3D images on my Panasonic VT25 without having to go through a lot of re-sizing, cropping or a lot of menu selections on the TV. Thanks, DueN.

Yes.

1080p 24fps per eye for movies. 720p 60fps per eye for games.

Being an avid photographer, I would love to play around with this but with my Mitsubishi only reading checkerboard, I'm not sure it would work. Do you think the Mits 3Dc adapter would let me see them?

btw, I have the Panny 350, but I'm thinking of returning it and getting the ps3. I only have 9 more days to return it. Will it completely take the place of the panny 3d bd?

If you have a 1.3 AVR the 350 may be the ideal solution with the dual outputs; the nice thing about the ps3 is you'll be able to play games. If you have a 1.4 hdmi receiver I'd go with the ps3; otherwise I'd go with what's more important to you; playing games in 3d or hd audio.

I am getting the Denon 3311 which is 1.4, and I'm not a big gamer, (although I might become one once I have the PS3)

I have a lot of personal HD video of my travels around the world that I like to view on my 65 inch TV thru my network. I'm hoping the PS3 with it's DLNA and media server will help me do that with fewer problems. I was able to do some with the Panny player but it was lacking. No Mp3 for example.

I'm not sure that my method will work with your Mitsubishi checkerboard format, but it works fine with my Panasonic, using sbs jpegs. If you want to give it a shot, I've posted a sample; here's a link you could try:

I picked up a pS3 yesterday at BB and the salesguy said that the 3d update was already out. I certainly trust the info I get here more than some guy at BB, but is he talking about something else?

http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/P...ighlight/false
According to this the 3d already works for games.

No, all of the HDMI 1.4a 3D formats can be transmitted with an HDMI 1.3 trasnsmitter.

I do not know if your receiver will pass through all 3D content untouched and it will not be able extract the audio form the packed buffer HDMI 1.4 3D fomat used by the 3D BR players.

Actually the PS3 will be upgraded via software to have the HDMI 1.4 functionality needed for 3D. If it does not detect a 1.4 compatible 3D TV it will not transmit 3D. The PS3 already does this with 3D games.

How on earth will it be able to do that? It'd be nice to know to save me from buying a 3d blu-ray player.
