Are you connecting directly to the TV or through a receiver?

And is this while playing 2D content? Usually a player will not look for a 3D display unless you are playing 3D content such as a 3D Blu-Ray. If you're watching a DVD or standard 2D Blu-Ray, or streaming content such as Netflix or YouTube, the player won't give you a 3D display message. If the player can convert 2D to 3D (some do, even though it's usually crappy), try that and see what happens.

Is Avatar an original disc, or a copy of one? You don't have to answer, but sometimes burned copies don't have all the data of the original.

If it isn't the disc itself, then something may be wrong in the setup of either the player or TV. I doubt that it's the cable, but it's possible. Usually cables work or they don't work. Can you borrow another high-speed cable just to check?

If you have HDMI-CEC (LG calls it SIMPLINK) turned on, try turning it off. Since both components aren't from the same maker, there might be some miscommunication there. It probably isn't the problem, but stranger things have happened.
