on another note, has anyone agreed on the ultimate decision of the "ideal settings" for the htct150?

I remember that there people way back on the htct100 forums had decided on the "best" sound field and the "best" settings/tweaks.

Just curious..

nope; no ultimate settings this time around for the CT150/350.

BTW where the hell is YOTR...we haven't heard of him in a long time; is he still deceived by his 350?

Got a HT-CT150 and in testing mode.

I watched TV programs, optical link from TV to 150. Display showed prologic II, LPCM. However, sound mainly comes from the center channel and the woofer, not left or right.

I switched sound field to 2 channel stereo, and sound comes from L/R, so it's not hardware problem.

Watched Bluray, dialog comes from center, music and some sound effect comes from left/right.

So I suspect it's simply that the TV shows I watched don't have much sound that need the left/right. Sounds like a waste to me. But again, I have not really owned any 5.1 systems before, so maybe it's correct when people say 50% of sound comes from the center.

Can anyone confirm? Is my experience "normal", or I missed something?

THANKS

there seems to be double the number of speakers in the 350 but smaller in size.. do you guys think it would make a difference, like say reduced mid range response (on account of smaller speakers), improved surround sound on account of double the number of speakers...?

like debated many times, no one has compared directly the 150 & 350. So no one knows which is better. But they should sound very similar that is for sure....i even suspect the CT150 may be a little better, speakers being bigger. Don't waste your money guys get the 150

True the speakers are a bit bigger, but still the extra speakers on the CT350 are likely to add up to being larger than the single larger speaker on the CT150. I doubt the 150 sounds better.

But of course this is the question, does it just add more volume with no increase in sound quality or does the 350 add both factors? I guess we'll have to wait for someone to test both of them to get a clear answer on that.

Also, i read that the CT350 has some mounting brackets for certain tv's. How does this work exactly, does it mount to the top of the TV or something? And is the 52HX909 one of the models supported by it?

Yep,,,, I would LOVE to see a side by side comparison of the 150 vs the 350 cuz Im wanting to know as well if the 350 is any better sound wise,,, and surround wise.

I was really going to get the 350 to compare it with my 150 but Ive been hanging out over in the projector threads for a bit as Im getting ready to get a new projector,, no extra funds at the moment for a CT-350 as all my money is going for the impending projector purchase.

Cheers

hi, were you successful in integrating more speaker and additional sub to your HT350? Just want to find out if it worked out for you and how did u do it.

I have been involved with amatuer double-blind testing of audio equipment for about thirty years. When it comes to a componenet like a soundbar, things like number and size of speakers and especially advertised output power or power handling are totally irrelevant. Only by doing serious testing of the designated devices could you make a sound judgement.

One thing to take note of, Sony has furnished the CT-150 to numerous testing groups, cNet, HomeTheaterMagazine, etc. I have yet to see a test of the CT-350. Usually a manufacturer submits their better unit if only submitting one for testing. Based on professional reviews and those of the owners, I feel the CT-150 sounds very good.

Sometimes manufacturers create a second more expensive product knowing that there is always a market for people who assume that because a product is more expensive and has specs that appear more impressive (although those specs have absolutely no bearing on the sound) it must be an upgrade to the product that everybody likes. Typically when someone purchases the so-called upgrade product, they are absolutely certain that their more expensive product peforms better.

In the early 1980's I took a marketing course on catastrophe theory. Wish I could remember more of they basics, but it covered scenarios just like this. My wife and I get a kick out of how this affects our own purchasing experiences even when we know what is going on phsychologically to make us want something from a marketing standpoint.

freeman your knowledge here is very much appreciated. i also agree that if sony chose to only send the ct150 is must be that they think it's the better overall product quality/price wise anyway.

Still tomsguide did review the 350...did sony send them that one ? humm

Per most professional reviewers, the JVC is one of the better inexpensive soundbars when playing music.

I have a Sony 34XBR800 that has no HDMI input, just DVI. However, the HT-CT150 manual has a warning against using an HDMI-DVI conversion cable. The '800 does support HDCP, so that shouldn't be the issue.

Is there any real reason for this warning? Is it just because of possible loss of picture quality?

Sorry dude but i thouht when you said before my post about my refund was so funny you were mocking me like you thought it was a stupid comment or something. If you didnt mean it that way im sorry for taking it that way sometimes its hard to tell what someone means with text.

PS. Does anyone know if the ht-ct350 has a fan built into the subwoofer?

Was not mocking you in any way,,,,, I have a very bad reputation for returning items I purchase (see all my past postings) and had returned and refunded more than a few soundbars in the last month or more.

What I thought you your joking about is when I said I was looking for a new projector and I was having trouble deciding which one to get,,,then your post right after mine said "I can always refund it",,, which I thought was directed at me and which I thought was truely funny givin my reputation for refunding soundbars I have purchased.

I guess we shall chalk it up to a mis-understanding as I honestly thought you were making a very funny comment directed at my refunding/returning items habit.

And yes, sometimes the written word does not translate the way it was meant.

Its all good.

Cheers

Ok dave well im sorry for the misunderstanding but wow that is very funny because my post wasnt even directed to you, lol!

So does anyone know if the htct350 has a fan built into the subwoofer? My friend was telling me it sounds like his has one and sometimes the sound can get pretty annoying when its set to a low volume. Im guessing the 150 has the same thing?

It appears there is a fan. It looks the same as you'd see on a PC tower and I can feel gentle air flow when it's turned on. Can't hear it at all though, even with just turning the SW on by itself.

I hope his isnt defective. He said he only hears the fan boot up for a few seconds after he turns it on then it gets very quiet. Can you test that on yours just to be sure? Make sure its quiet in the room when testing it. I appreciate the help as i may be purchasing it from him soon.

Around here quiet is a relative term , but with my ear right by the back of the SW I cannot hear a fan at all. Just the gentle air flow when I put my hand right by the grill.

I dont think you would get the "extenders" for this cable.
You have would have to splice them yourself and because you spliced them you might void the warranty.

Im guessing your asking about the "speaker" wire and not the 3 prong power cord,,, it does help to be specific.

If you are in fact asking about the speaker wire its very easy to extend and will not void your warrenty.

The speaker clips have release pins on them,, just push in the release pin and the clip comes right off,,,, get longer speaker wires and put the clips on those new longer speaker wires,,, Ive done it before and it takes just a few minutes and its very easy.

Just make sure to connect the correct clips to the correct wires, (poss and neg sides of the wires to possitive and neg sides of the clips).

As I recall, the instructions how to do it are also in the manual.

Cheers

What if instead you used the HDMI (ARC) connection from the TV to the CT150, not optical? Is that better/worse that hooking up all the components to the CT150 directly?
