I am looking to replace my 5.1 system with a soundbar. The wife doesn't like the wires on the 5.1 around the room but the dogs like to chew on them.
I have a recangular room (probably 16x9) and a 58 inch Samsung Plasma.
The Systems will be on the longer wall, Right wall is the windo patio door, back wall is full, left wall lead upstairs to the kitchen (Backsplit house), so there is a bottom portion of the wall, the middle is open where the stair are, and there is an upper part of that wall (think of an oreo cookie, and the filling is the open part on that wall).

My thoughts by reading the forums are to go with the Yamana YHT-S400 or the Sony CT350.
Is there something on the market which will deliver better sound in that price range, or if I upped my price a little bit (to a better yamaha or other brands)?

I know it won't be realy surround sound, but I'm ok with that as long as it can fool my ears and delivers good sound, good bass if needed and can hear speach and dialogue.

I have a PS3, HD Cable DVR and Media Player all on HDMI. My last question to go along with the proper soundbar choices is should I hook it up with all the HDMI's into the soundbar and then output the video from the soundbar to the TV or will that lessen my TV video quality with the units I mentioned above (are there others that will work better in that manner),

or
Shoudl I run all the HDMI devices directly into the TV and then output the Audio from the TV to the Soundbar Via HDMI (if possible) or Digital Optical cable?

Thanks,

I assume you still have a receiver? You could opt for a Polk Surroundbar 50 for $500 and reuse the subwoofer you have now.

My receiver is old and doesn't have any HDMI ports. Only RCA and 1 Optical in and 1 Coax in, so this unit will becomre retired, or be set up in the basement office with the old rear projection tv.

Big O i am in the same case as you yamaha s400 or sony (both will be out in 2 months where i live); after weeks of lecture, i decided to go (for now) with the yamaha. Forums in the US don't seem to speak about it, but on AVFORUMS it has been somehow busy for that topic (i am there too!)

reviews for the s400 have been very positive and even if the sony is a good bar, reviews on this forum have not said its that great.....

ps: also yamaha juste released a firware update to the bar making it 3D ready

if you could however go for the yamaha 4100+sub...that would be the ideal solution. GOOD luck

Thanks, but I'm kind of looking in a price range around 1000 or less.
The 4100 is way too much money.

With a 1k price range you could do a Denon 591 receiver, polk surroundbar 50 for $900 and reuse your old subwoofer unless you felt you need something better and upgrade that down the line.

I also forgot to mention I'm in Canada, so the prices are a little higher here.
I plan to use the old surround in the basement, so I"ll have to get all new parts from scratch.

It's a tough decision that's why I'm relying of you guys with the hands on feel for the products for support.

Of the 2 I mentioned, is there a better one out there for a little bit more (sub woofer included), or are they good enough to fill my room.

Does anyone thing the Vizio VHT510 5.1 would be better to wait for? Can't find anything on it having HDMI inputs

Has anyone tried the Sony CT350/150 and the Yamaha YHT S400?
My room is actually probably more like 20X9. Of the 3 which is the one that you've heard more positives or recommend?

i only recall one member that had both the s400 and sony CT500. And said the yamaha was a little bit better. The CT500 is also better than the new models (aside from the quality issues...)

The vizio will surely sound good but there is not a date yet; i guess it'll be Christmas 2010...but no hdmi and for me its a no-no

if you insist on talking about the sony bars, go to the official thread, more people can help

What is everyone's suggestion if price was no option? (I don't mean crazy expensive)
What would be the best one on the market for quality vs price?

Yamaha YSP 4100? Or are there better less expensive ones? Or with my room dimensions is it worth just getting the ones mentioned in the initial post.

Has anyone tried out the Yamaha S400? I'd really like to know first hand impressions.
Does the sub built in rattle the shelf?
Still deciding between that and the Sony CT350
