I'd like to think I'm a normally capable tech person but this one escapes me and I've searched other threads in this forum and didn't find the answer but if this has already been answered I apologize.

I have a Panasonic Viera HDTV.

Cable box internet, HDMI cable to TV. Works great.

Xbox 360 is taking up the other HDMI cable connected to the TV. Works great.

Got an RCA soundbar that only has the red/white audio connections on the back of it. When I plug it into the back of the TV (the red/white audio out that I WAS using for my xbox until I switched over to HDMI), no sound.

I've tried just about everything. Am I incorrect in thinking that the TV will output audio to the soundbar just from connecting the red/white audio plugs to it? Thanks for any input!

Does your TV have an RCA audio OUTPUT? If you connected your XBox to the TV in the past, that is most likely an INPUT. Post the model # to your TV and also see what audio outputs your TV has.

The TV connection says "Digital Audio Out" that I'm plugging the soundbar connectors into. Is the "digital" part the problem or something?

It's Model # TC-L32C5

You shouldn't have been able to successfully connect your XBox to that in the past but that is most likely a digital coax audio output. I can't find a manual but I did see a spec sheet. It appears that you only have that digital audio output. You are attempting to make an analog connection. To use this soundbar, you will need a converter adapter. I have to run now but will be back later to help if nobody else comes by.

The analog red/white is an INPUT which worked fine for connecting the xbox TO the TV. Panny TVs no long have red/white analog OUTPUT. The digital audio out is probably optical, not coax but you need to check the manual or back of TV so you get the correct cable. Then you will need a digital to analog converter.

This is the converter you'd need, plus the cables.

As long as the Panny isn't passing 5.1 audio through from the cable box you'll be okay. Most (if not all) Pannys only output PCM from sources attached via HDMI.

Of course you could return the soundbar and get one that has better connection options. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif
