> Panasonic SC-HTB770 Technical Help
Received and setup yesterday. Everything is as expected and the sound quality is much better than than the Panasonic Plasmas TV I have. On top of that bluebooth scream is just sweet.
I do have a problem though with Viera Link. (Talking to Panasonic support is totally useless). This soundbar has HDMI switching. So the connection is: Verizon Fios box -> Soundbar receiver (part of the soundbar system) -> TV (via the HDMI ARC terminal). When the soundbar receiver is turned off the TV displays video just fine. However, when the soundbar receiver is turned on, the video is displayed 25% of the time. Turning off/on the soundbar receiver will sometimes solve the problem but not every time. I do receive audio thru the HDMI ARC link all the time. So there is sound all the time.
Any idea? Is the receiver putting too much resistence so the video signal is not strong enough for the TV?
Odd problem. May not have anything to do with Viera Link and ARC probably isn't involved since that is only for sending audio FROM a TV to an external system.
There are a few steps you can take to try to isolate the source of the problem.
- Try a different HDMI cable from the bar to the TV
- Try plugging the HDMI into a different port on the TV
- Try plugging the FIOS box into a different port on the bar
- Do you have another source device (like a BD player) that you can connect to the bar to see if the issue happens with that as well?
- Just for fun, turn off Viera Link
My TV has two HMDI inputs, one marked ARC the other one, not. Surprisingly both inputs behave the same. Both can send audio back to the receiver.
Switches between these two inputs makes no difference.
I turned off Viera Link it makes no difference.
I think the receive just confused. Sometimes there is video, sometimes not.
I am ordering some high speed HDMI cables from monoprice to see if it makes any difference.
Both can send audio back to the receiver.
Audio is not being sent back to the receiver. The audio is processed by the receiver and sent to the soundbar speakers. Only the video is sent to your TV.
Maybe a new HDMI cable will resolve the problem. If not, then you may have a defective unit that should be returned to the retailer.
Another thing to try is connect FIOS box to HDMI1 on TV, connect TVs HDMI2(ARC) to sound bar receiver unit HDMI OUT (ARC).
On TV in Viera link settings set home theater as default speakers, and od the same on sound bar settings.
I have similar set up but with Onkyo 2.1 system. Fios and Roku are connected to TV via HDMI and TV to Onkyo via HDMI ARC.
All i have to do is turn on TV and it automatically turns on Onkyo, My fios remote is set to control TV sound and TV actually delegates it to Onkyo.
New High speed HDMI cable has arrived. I bought the best ones from Monoprice. But the problem is still there. It seems that the receive has a mind of it's own. Sometimes it works every time. Sometimes you have to restart it a few times for it to work.
It kind of sucks for an otherwise great product. I really like the sound in "Cinema" mode when playing movies.
^^ I suspect your device may be defective. The only time mine gets "confused" is when I use blue tooth. Other than that it's use is transparent, I don't even use the supplied remote.
I have everything going to my TV then use ARC for audio back to the soundbar. I never have to switch inputs on the device. This is not ideal because it down mixes the audio, but I tried it both ways and found no loss in fidelity from the soundbar, at least for Directtv HD programming.
I use the switching from the receiver. I suspect you'll experience the same problem.
How does your setup work? You have an hdmi output from the tv? Or you use optical?

I have had it setup both ways with no issues.
I have my unit installed in a closet out of sight. I extended the speaker cables and ran them to the soundbar. I initially tried using the receiver as the hdmi switch, but I could not control the inputs like I wanted. When I turned on the blu-ray it would switch over automatically, but then when I wanted to swap back to TV I had to go to the closet and use the little remote. This was unnecessarily complicated for my intended use.
I then ran everything to my TV and ran HDMI w/ARC back to the TV-IN HDMI input on the receiver. Now I control the inputs with my TV remote and leave the receiver unit on the TV-IN HDMI input. Everything works well. The only nit I have is when I go to blue-tooth I need to go to the closet and use the remote to turn it on and then switch back to TV-IN when I am done.
Power on/off works great. Also, if I turn the unit off my TV reverts back to TV speakers, and when I turn the unit back on it goes back to the soundbar. I have only had that mess up once.
Now though, I just use the TV remote for everything without giving it a thought. Works as well as the integrated TV speakers functionally; sonically, the soundbar is much improved.
Ozzie - I still don't get it. My TV has two HDMI INPUTS. One marked HDMI 1 the other HDMI 2 (ARC). So if I connect the verizon box to HDMI1 and XBOX to HDMI 2 (ARC) how do I connect the TV to the receiver? I can only assume you have an "HDMI ARC" output that you use to connect to the receiver.
Sorry, I mistyped .....
Blu-Ray goes to receiver (Blu-Ray)
DVR goes to TV (HDMI 1)
TV (HDMI 2 w/ARC) goes to receiver (TVaudio)
Viera Link -on-
Power on link -yes-
Power off link -yes-
This allows me to control my blu-ray via my tv remote. With this setup I never use the soundbar remote or blu-ray remote. Everything is done via my tv remote and my DirectTV remote. Power on/off, inputs etc.
Everything is Panasonic and not sure how it would work with a 3rd HDMI device.
You might need to get Harmony 650 remote to get things working together. Since harmony is activity based you can force each component into specific input/mode.
FIOS ---> HDMI 1 on receiver
XBOX ---> HDMI 2 on receiver
Reciever AV Out HDMI ---> TV HDMI 2 (ARC)
On remote you'd set up:
Watch TV activity: so with one press of the button it would fire of following commends : TV - on, FIOS - on, receiver - on, TV to HDMI 2, , reciever to HDMI 1.
XBox activity: with one press of the button it would fire of following commends : TV - on, XBOX - on, receiver - on, TV to HDMI 2, , reciever to HDMI 2.
I setup as Ozzie suggested and it worked like a charm. Even though this is not I. The menu. So all I need to do is switching using the tv remote. The soundbar receiver will automatically switch with the tv. I will NEVER need to use the soundbar remote. I use the remote just to switch sound mode. It will be even nicer if the sound mode is remembered per input. Big thank you to everyone trying to help. I am very happy with this setup!

Glad it worked for you. It took me a few times to get it configured to work how I wanted. It sure is nice not having to use the little remote! That was a requirement for mine. My HT has so many remotes no one but me uses it. This was for the TV the wife and kids use. Needed to be simple and work everytime.
I have a Pana P50ST60 TV connected via ARC to this speaker system and my settings are on Viera Link -on-; Power on link -yes-; Power off link -yes-.
But for some reason every other day or so it reverts back to the TV volume instead of HT Volume! What is turning off this device, the manual doesn't help? Everything is in the open, cool area, so no heat related issues!
I have a very odd problem. My tv is a Emerson LF501EM4F and it doesn't have a HDMI (ARC) when the panasonic sound bar does. All the tv has is HDMI and coaxle cable. We are so lost on hooking this thing up right and having it work. PLEASE HELPS ME!!!
