I'm also searching for a good value / sound option in a passive soundbar. So far I like the Def. Tech. XTR SSA5 for its size, but the larger/thicker/deeper SSA-50 reportedly sounds much better. The Atlantic Tech. FS 7.1 seems like a good candidate for 5.1 or even 7.1 sound, but it's also a bit heavier and deeper than I would like. The GoldenEar 3D has some very positive reviews, but it's L/C/R only and there are not many deals on this product. I'm still looking, but these seem to be the top choices so far....

Dedicated 7.1 HT: Visio 47" XVT / Marantz / Sony BD / PSB Infinity
TV Room 2.0 HT: Sharp 60" / Marantz / Sony BD / Energy RC

For $699 I would strongly recommend the Sonos Playbar. It is great for streaming music wirelessly and even listening to music. One of the nicest features is the soundbar actually having a dedicated center channel. Therefore, your vocals and dialogue will be much stronger and cleaner with this soundbar. You do have to purchase the Sonos Bridge to your existing wireless router in the house to make the system complete. You can also add a wireless sub later if you want.

The Sonos may or may not be great. I've never heard one so have no opinion on that, but it doesn't meet the definition of a passive soundbar.

Out of the list above, I'd stick with Def Tech. The SSA50 is a great product for a reasonable price.

Polk CHT 400. You can find one for around that price if you look on ebay.
