I just got the HR 44 Genie from Directv. I have it hooked up to my tv with HDMI for video and then using an optical cable to get sound to my soundbar. I have had a strange thing happening with sound dropping to the soundbar, but I can still hear some sound from my wireless subwoofer. I have tried a new optical cable and have even switched to a different toslink input on the soundbar. This is the exact setup I've had for quite while and didnt have any issues with my previous DVR from directv. It does seem that my local stations have it happening most often (NBC for sure). Once I power off the soundbar and back on, everything works normal. I'm very frustrated and dont know what else to try. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!!
If your TV has an optical out, I would connect the same optical cable you are now using from the TV to the soundbar. If the problem goes away (not likely) that would rule out the cable and the soundbar. If that in fact does solve the problem then I would get a new genie. If your TV does not have an optical out, I would ask Directv for a new genie. Everything worked fine with previous Directv box.
Well I left the hdmi running video and used the existing cable, but when optical out on tv to the same input on soundbar. Watched tv for 30 min and didn't have a single sound drop out. Not sure what to do now!
Does your soundbar indicate whether it is Dolby Digital? If the soundbar is receiving Dolby Digital from the optical out on the TV, I would leave it this way because you are really getting the same audio quality as with the optical coming directly from the genie. Some TV's will only send stereo from optical out unless using their internal tuner. If your TV is only sending stereo then I would try to get a different genie. Your setup should work without dropouts in my opinion.
Finally got a replacement Genie. Same issue! I don't know why the Genie and my soundbar won't play nice. Didn't have a single issue with my previous DVR
