I'm looking for a soundbar that has remote pass-through for my GF. She's renting and is unable to run wires through her apt's baseboards. The IR pass-through would let her place the soundbar directly in front of the TV. A wireless subwoofer would be a definite bonus for her kids' movie/gaming time.
Budget = $250, definitely NOT more than $300.
Size = 47" TV flanked w/ misc tchotckes that have somehow survived her cats and kids. As such the soundbar would have to be ~42" long max
Not sure what you mean by IR pass-through. IR will not pass through any solid object. However, you can place the soundbar in front of the TV if you get a soundbar that supports Consumer Electronic Control (CEC). This will allow the sound bar to turn the TV on and Off and adjust volume on the TV. Is she using a cable box?
You can get an IR Repeater if needed. Monoprice has one that isn't too expensive. It's definitely more convenient if the soundbar includes that feature, but it's not your only option.
The Yamaha 1030 from Costco does pass through IR signals.
I also have a Yamaha 103 that is supposed to pass IR, but it doesn't work. I bought it used so not sure if it worked when new? I simply re-purposed an unused Wii balance board as a workaround for a TV stand.
Most of the Yamaha bars do but placement is crucial. You can't place the sound bar against the TV, it needs to be a little in front of it to work. Maybe one of the speaker base sound bars might be better solution, like the ZVOX models.
