New HEOS Soundbar

It looks like Denon is about to launch an updated version of their HEOS HomeCinema Soundbar. Attached is a picture.

I haven't been able to find out any info about it though. Do any of you know the specs, price, etc?

In the attached picture you will see the new HEOS HomeCinema Soundbar above the current version in the picture. Also, it appears there will be a new subwoofer to go with it as well. The new subwoofer is on the far left, next to the current subwoofer.

Denon makes good stuff. The hardware is much better than Sonos in my opinion, and the app has largely caught up. They often go on sale as well. There's really not much reason to buy Sonos at this point.

So, I've been able to find a bit more information on the new HEOS items...no thanks to Denon customer service.

The new soundbar will be called the HEOS Bar. It appears that the HEOS Bar will be released around the same time as the HEOS AVR, specifically one source lists the release date as 4/14/17. It will have 9 drivers and 4 HDMI ports. Audio format support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Also, it will be sold independently from the new subwoofer. It is safe to say that this is meant to be a competitor to the Sonos Playbar which also has 9 drivers. Price appears to be $999 according to one source but I would be surprised if it is higher than $699.

The new subwoofer will be called the HEOS Subwoofer. According to the specs I have been able to find, it will have dual 5 1/4 in drives. This is the same as the current subwoofer that comes with the HEOS HomeCinema. I am not certain these specs are accurate however, as in pictures, the HEOS Subwoofer is much larger than the one that comes with the HomeCinema. No price info on this one yet.

Attached are a few pictures of each for your viewing pleasure.

It looks like they posted the info on the site:

This looks like a pretty neat product!

Also a YouTube video:

On the website they call it a bi-amplified soundbar... That is interesting.

Most sound bars use a separate amp for each driver so it is not surprising and just marketing. It is a good thing though, I wish all speakers had an amp for each driver with an electronic crossover. But, for sound bars it is more common because it has to be to use the DSP for faux surround sound and expanded soundstage.

Doesn't look like this will not need the faux surround sound because they are offering Wireless rears as part of the package.

Anyone know if it has a Sub-Pre-Out allowing one to use their own sub?

The sound bar will still use the phase and timing of drivers to create a faux front sound stage even if it doesn't need to create the surround channels because it uses surround speakers. The reality is you can only get so much sound stage from speaker drivers placed a few feet apart. No getting around the physics of sound.

There are basically two main ways of creating a sound stage and surround sound when speakers aren't placed around the room. One is to use the timing of sound and the other is to reflect it off surfaces in the room. The first method is by far the most common because it is the cheapest to implement. The second method requires more drivers and amps but tends to give a more convincing effect if you have reflective surfaces for it to bounce sound off.

Whenever you are using the timing/phase of sound you are trading off some sound quality to get the desired effect. If it didn't we would have given up on placing speakers around the room a long time ago. The reflection method has limitations too. There is no free lunch with acoustics.

What will I be losing NOT having Dolby Atmos?
I was thinking about the Yamaha.

Small room just off master bedroom.
I'm buying a LG 65" B7 or C7, wall mounted.
I'll include the separate base and rear speakers.
Not looking to include a AVR with full speaker set-up. (other than described above)

Thanks in advance...

Mark

Anyone know if it will accept/playback 5.1 PCM audio over HDMI?

Just spoke with a customer service rep at Denon. He confirmed they will be doing a firmware update in the next month to their existing sound bar (HomeCinema) to allow support for wireless rear surrounds. Not sure if it will be 5.1, since that bar is just 2.1 and doesn't have a center channel.

I would love to get the new bar, but I bought the HomeCinema in the Fall and can't justify getting the new one plus a new sub.

Got mine on Wednesday directly from Denon. Great sound plus I have it setup with my 2 heos 1s for surruond sound. Much bigger than the HomeCinema.

Question.

It has 4 HDMI inputs on the back. Should I plus my Amazon Fire TV into the soundbar or leave it plugged into my TV (Samsung KU7000)? My audio setting on the tv says it is bitstreaming the output and using PCM. I know the soundbar can decode any popular format minus atmos.

No. Couldn't justify the extra 600 for the sub. Didn't feel the need for sub in a small living room in NYC.
