ESPN 3D Lines Up First Three College Football Games

Quote:

Network To Present High-Profile Boise State-Va.Tech, OSU-Miami, Clemson-Auburn Contests In The Enhanced Format

ESPN 3D will kick off its college football coverage with games in each of the season's first three weeks.

The first pits No. 2 Boise State, entering the contest with a 14-game win streak, against No. 5 Virginia Tech, according to an ESPN.com preseason poll, on Monday Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. (ET) from FedEx Field.
On Sept. 11 at 3:40 p.m., No. 3 and defending Big Ten Conference champion Ohio State will square off against the No. 19 Miami Hurricanes. This marks the second time the Buckeyes have been featured in 3D, as ESPN tested the technology when the squad played USC on Sept. 9, 2009.
The third week of the season features Clemson visiting Auburn on Sept. 18, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

All told, ESPN3 plans to televise a baker's dozen of college football games this season, concluding with the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game on Monday, Jan. 10 at 8:30 p.m.

http://www.multichannel.com/article/...ball_Games.php

Since this article, ESPN has added games on 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 11/6, & 11/13. Overall, ESPN 3D will broadcast 13 CFB games, including the National Championship Game.

Here's the page for the ESPN 3D schedule:

http://espn.go.com/3d/schedule.html

It shows the first three games and the dates only for the remaining games.

LG Electronics, Best Buy Team Up to Bring College Football in 3D to FedExField

LG 3D HDTVs Set Up at Stadium for 3D Broadcast of Boise State vs. Virginia Tech

LANDOVER, Md., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- As Virginia Tech and Boise State face off Monday night in the first NCAA® college football game broadcast in 3D, LG Electronics USA and Best Buy are joining forces to bring the 3D experience to college football fans at FedExField™.

At the Labor Day game, broadcast by ESPN 3D, fans at the stadium will be able to experience the game in 3D at Best Buy-LG kiosks built around eight 55-inch LG Infinia LX9500 3D HDTVs on the Club Level of the stadium. Fans will experience college football, delivered to the LG screens by DIRECTV, in a whole new dimension. Representatives from Best Buy will be staffing the kiosks to answer questions about the new 3D technology and highlight the world's first Full LED 3D HDTVs.

"There's nothing like experiencing a college football game live, especially when two of the top five ranked teams are playing each other. LG is adding to the experience with 3D viewing at FedExField, providing fans with 'Something Better' during the game," said Jay Vandenbree, senior vice president, sales, LG Electronics USA. "As an NCAA corporate partner, we are proud to partner with Best Buy to showcase this first-ever 3D broadcast of an NCAA college football game."

To help promote 3D for the entire stadium audience, Best Buy and LG are sponsoring a special fan appreciation event. Between the first and second quarters, one lucky fan will have the opportunity to toss a football to win an LG 3D home entertainment package including an LG Infinia 3D HDTV, LG 3D Blu-ray Disc player and two pairs of LG 3D glasses.

In addition to being an NCAA Corporate Partner, LG Electronics also is the official HDTV of FedExField, with more than 300 LG LCD screens positioned throughout the stadium.

"Thanks to LG and Best Buy, our Club Level guests will have a special experience at the game, viewing college football in 3D for the first time," said Mitch Gershman, chief marketing officer of the Washington Redskins. "This builds on our alliance with LG Electronics, which is a strong technology partner for the Redskins and FedExField."

The LG LX9500's proprietary Full LED Slim technology elevates picture quality with LED backlighting that supports detailed local dimming for improved contrast and detail, while also allowing for a sleek frame with an ultra-slim .92-inch wide bezel for a virtually borderless look.

Available at Best Buy's Magnolia stores, the set itself measures less than an inch thick at its thinnest point. This state-of-the-art HDTV, which works with the use of active shutter glasses and an emitter built directly into the television, provides deeper black levels, sharper colors and an overall uniform picture quality that typically could not be achieved on an ultra-thin set. With an astonishing 480Hz refresh rate, LED local dimming, 2D THX Certification and its eye-catching super-slim frame, the LX9500 is a stunning display whether the power is on or off.

I don't have ESPN 3D (nor a 3D television) but I'm watching the VT/BSU game on ESPNHD. They just showed Kirk and Brent doing the pre-game analysis, and either ESPN did a horrible job with the greenscreen of the field behind them, or that was a blatant attempt to make those guys 3D.

They looked 3D and I don't even have a 3D tv.

Someone report back if 3D does anything at all for football? I'd like to see it, maybe i'll have to get a demo of it somewhere.

Hmm looks like low level shots will be the rule tonight on ESPN-3D. As usual ESPN PQ leaves a lot to be desired....

football looks great in 3D. brent and kirk aren't on the 3D broadcast though, so whatever you're seeing had nothing to do with that.

I'm getting some occasional flickering in my feed, using a mitsubishi 73, I don't know if it's the stream, the converter or the tv, or even my old cable box, but it's definitely coming out of the display every now and then like it's losing a frame. anyone else seeing that?

End zone shots are sick, that blocked kick replay was amazing!!

Some early camera focus issues for sure. Low side view is not ideal IMO.

Watching on D* ESPN 106

Actually fairness compels me to admit that the PQ actually is pretty good so far...the low level, tighter than usual camera angles are very interesting and actually make me feel more involved in the game than would normally be the case. It is obvious that ESPN/ABC has spent a lot of time optimizing the camera positioning for 3D.

As an Alabama fan I am most impressed by Boise St. So far...these guys are for real!

Watching on D* channel 106...

I'm definitely seeing that. I thought it was my glasses losing sync or something. It seems like every minute or two the screen flickers. It's very annoying.

BTW, watching through Comcast.

Wow I think it looks terrible. Constant focus issues, ghosting in every scene. It just hurts my eyes to even watch it, had to turn it off after 10 minutes. I can't say it really adds anything to the program, switched over to the regular ESPN HD channel and its just better.

After watching blu-ray in 3D the low resolution of cable just looks bad.

Now basketball I could see as great it 3D since the action is so much closer to the camera.

I've seen focus issues, especially from the sideline cameras, but i'm not seeing any real ghosting problems. I think there's a lot of seeing what you're looking for there. it's just more realistic with the added depth, the end zone cameras are like front row bleach seat...except I'm at home drinking cheaper beer.

Well I'm drinking Alaskan Amber and the game doesn't look any better in 3D. I hope ESPN steps up their game. The World Cup looked fantastic compared to this garbage. The sony commercial even had significant ghosting.

One thing to remember is that World Cup was 1080i60 whereas tonight's game is in ESPN's usual 720p (and crappy 720p as usual)...

Yes 720p is just not great. I see no ghosting though.

Yea, no ghosting for me, but definitely flickering every so often.

Thought it might be my glasses (xpand x102s), but I never had issues with them before so I wasn't sure.

Aside from that I'm thoroughly enjoying the game.

Edit: watching on D*

I'm getting the NFL Red Zone splash screen on ESPN3d channel 334 rather than the college football game. I was told by the clueless Comcast support that my box was not compatible, even though I was told before that it was. My box is the DCH3416. I was told only the dcx3200 dcx3400 pacerng110 are compatible. Does anyone else have this problem? Is anyone actually getting the game on Comcast ESPN3D. I am close to switching to Direct TV.

look in the comcast post. it's possible they're doing mpeg-4 in your area, in which case you wouldn't be compatible. also, are you sure they put the 3d codes on your account? I'm watching on the dch box and it's working here in michigan.

I get the flicker fairly often. It's part of the feed and isn't glasses related (3D Vision).

I HATE the crappy TnB 720p ESPN 3D uses! It's constantly blurry especially following the football or reading the scoreboard. 1280x360 is WAY too low resolution for me!

Seriously someone give me an email address to send comments on ESPN 3D so I can tell then to switch to 1080i SbS (960x1080 per eye). There aren't motion problems with 1080i and having an actual HD resolution is more important anyway. 1280x360 is CRAP!
