Everyone agrees that there is not enough 3D Blu Ray content at this time. Everyone also agrees that lack of content probably is inhibiting the sale of new 3D TV's.

So how about this: Hollywood has a lot of great old 3D movies in the can in their libraries. Movies from the 1950's for the most part. John Wayne's Hondo. Warner Bros' House of Wax. Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder. The campy Creature from the Black Lagoon. Etc. The list goes on. All movies, for the most part, not seen by the current generation!

Anyone know how hard it would be to transpose these to Blu Ray 3D for current day sales?? Or would that be impossible or impossibly expensive??

Just as they are updating many of the great old Classics, even including some silent classics, why not the old 3D movies as well?

It took years for classic movies to become profitable on DVD. I would assume the same for 3D Blu-ray. The market is currently not big enough to support the release of niche titles that will undoubtedly require expensive remastering.

p.s. 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' is not campy.

I have no idea how hard it would be but I do know it would be a hoot watching these old movies in 3d with some real popping in your eye scenes
While at it they should bring back the 70's 3D Kung Foo Movies.

They would be expensive to produce. Twice as much as a 2D catalog film because everything is doubled. Instead of dealing with a single negative or interpositive, you would have two of them (one for each eye). Color correction, digitizing the film elements all add to the cost of the production along with any restoration of the film elements themselves.

You are talking about 55+ year old movies.

Blu Ray adoption has been mostly to people whole like films, and spend money on them. The people who don't... still use DVD.

I'd like to see them release Friday the 13th 3D and Jaws 3D from the 80's as well. Those two movies would satisfy those of us who want some pop out 3D effects.

They would be cheaper to produce then the 3D films from the 1950's. When 3D was reborn in the 1980s they went the cheapest way possible. Gone were the dual camera rigs and dual projectors. Instead, they used a single camera with a beam splitter to capture the L & R images within a single 35mm frame. Then a single projector was used in the theater.

Technicolor now offers to convert digital 3D movies to this presentation method for those theaters that have 35mm projectors and want to show 3D films (new ones).

Some of these movies were released as 3D field sequential DVDs, so hopefully there are already digital masters.

Most of my family and friends who are interested enough in 3D to come over and watch some are looking more for the "pop out 3D effects" by default and aren't too sure about the "into the screen 3D effects" of recent titles.

That's to be expected I suppose, because all the ads show stuff coming out of the screen at the audience and not into the screen. I would like to see more pop out. The entire movie being pop out would get old, but it would be nice to have it done a few times throughout the movie. We see things close up in real life, why not in 3D movies?

Many of the 1950s 3-D movies were restored in recent years. Brand spanking new prints of lots of them were shown at recent 3-D festivals. Elements for most of them are in good condition. So far, THE MAD MAGICIAN and two Three Stooges shorts are already available for download via Sony's Playstion Network. MISS SADIE THOMPSON has been prepared for release soon.

Don't be surprised to see a a few of the other more well known classics to surface on disc in the next 12 months, and for others to show up via broadcast.

COMIN' AT YA! has beeen digitized and has already premiered in a new version in Berlin, and plans for Blu-rayand PPV release are underway.

Some of this stuff is coming. Be patient.

While I agree, the classic 3d movies from yesteryear would be cool - the problem is this is the bleeding edge... and whenever we're on the bleeding edge, there's a price to pay - and right now its lack of content.

Blurays are still struggling compared to dvd sales.... so 3d .... LOL, its gonna be a while

I didn't think about that, the in your face/lap/living room 3D advertising is a bit misleading.

Many of the 1950s 3-D movies were restored in recent years. Brand spanking new prints of lots of them were shown at recent 3-D festivals.

And I've seen a great deal of them, at both of the SabuCat 3-D Festivals at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. They had a number of them struck from original camera negatives (tending to be rather magenta; they could not afford Dye Transfer Tech prints), and a great many shown from what were touted as the only surviving prints. Actually one of the more impressive 3-D offerings was Robot Monster, and it sadly had quite a bit of missing frames. The festival organizers spoke of a beautifully restored print of Hondo, which they were unable to show due to rights issues. Dial M for Murder was unfortunately the worst looking film of the entire series.

I and various others spoke about these festivals in the DVD and Movie review section. If anyone is interested you could try searching to see if the threads still exist on the site somewhere.

The long and short of it is: some of the most important and in-demand of the old 3-D films would most likely be in imperfect condition. The powers that be are probably a bit timid about springing such stuff early in the format's life.

most of you probably know that THE MAD MAGICIAN is available from SONY is you have a PS3. Not quite as good as a blu ray...but it is not too bad....and of course the movie has Vincent Price at his best!!...Good fun.

Probably a stupid question, but as a non-PS3 guy, is there any way to download these and play them off a hard drive or burned disc on say an OPPO?

I'd love to have some classic 3D content.

Much better to have a shark coming out of the screen. THAT he understands.
