4D technology coming to 200 US cinemas to help you feel and smell the action
Quote:
A company called CJ Group out of Korea may be able to blast you from your stupor -- it's bringing so-called 4D to nearly 200 theaters stateside. That extra 'D' won't let you warp spacetime, but instead will bring your other senses into play with seats that move and thump, smells from things like flowers or gunpowder, and artificial wind, rain and lightening. All that extra stimulation could bump the freight of a seat by around eight bucks, and movie house owners will need to shell out half of the $2 million cost to retrofit each salon. But CJ Group claims it's been hugely popular in markets like Asia and Mexico, so theaters there have quickly recouped the cost.

Sounds fun. Not sure about an extra $8 per ticket though.

Imagine watching the Jeff Daniels diarrhea scene in Dumb and Dumber in 4D. I want no part of that.

'Avatar' goes 4D in Korea
Quote:
The 4D screening uses more than 30 effects during the 3D film's 162 minute run, including moving seats, smells of explosives, sprinkling water, laser lights and wind. Despite the much higher $15.80 ticket price (an average ticket costs $6.90), screenings are regularly sold out.

According to the LA Times, the 4D experience is wowing fans in South Korea, Thailand and Mexico, where CJ Group has 29 specialty theatres that regularly screen big Hollywood titles such as Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Prometheus.

As you can see from the short list of movies - 4D is being used for big budget action movies

Why anyone would think otherwise is beyond me. rolleyes.gif

Hope they get these here in Japan near my city. This would be great, besides the smelling fart scenes. I'd imagine Pirates would be amazing in one of these.

Pirate's rotten teeth, drunks, pigs, sailors' quarters... yeah, I'd pay 8 bucks to smell that.

They had something like this back in the 60's in Chicago at the Borger Warner Science Hall. It wasn't in 3D but the had the heat of a hot scene the cold of winter and the smell of flowers going on. I remember it was a free exhibit.

Oh good, can't wait to watch the Caesarian scene in Prometheus with realistic abdomen-slicing pain effects.

Not the same giving scratch and sniff cards to the audience versus in-theater effects. Today, the only in-theater effects are multichannel sound and those theaters with motion seats
