Some people were wondering if the Tiger was real or not, which is a compliment to the CG work for once. I usually find CG animals a "little off" even in movies like Chronicles of Narnia. But it looks very convincing here.

Also glad to see Ang Lee join other directors like Herzog and Scorsese in making native 3D movies that aren't just blockbuster films.

Saw the trailer at the theater a while back. I was starting to think the point was to make you sea sick.

Reactions from NY Film Festival world premiere are largely positive, with everyone buzzing about some truly wonderful visuals from Lee and a masterful use of the 3D. And yes, Oscar talk looks to have already begun.

It'll make some here fall asleep I'm sure, but I'm going to have my eyes wide open the entire time.

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. If it's anywhere near as good as the phenomenal novel upon which is based, it will be excellent at best.

Getting good reviews. Probably not in the running for best picture but surely on a technical side it will win big or at least get a lot of nominations.

The photography MUST be great in this picture as I never thought the great hater of 3-D Roger Ebert would say this:

"What astonishes me is how much I love the use of 3-D in "Life of Pi." I've never seen the medium better employed, not even in "Avatar," and although I continue to have doubts about it in general, Lee never uses it for surprises or sensations, but only to deepen the film's sense of places and events."

It would seem all Lee's pre-planning of the shots of this film paid off. Looking forward to seeing it.

Saw the movie and is one of the best films I've seen in 3D.
Not many big popout scenes but great depth throughout the film -really really well done.

Definitely one for my 3D collection....hope they don't butcher the bluray release like they did with Hugo. Seemingly perfect use of 3D for an amazing film....lot's of Oscars nominations. Even James Cameron of Avatar & Titanic 3D fame is in awe of this gem from Ang Li.

As I just posted in the 3D blu-ray release thread....

Just saw that "Life of Pi" is up for pre-order at Best Buy with a release date of 3/12!

I just watched this last night. Probably my favorite 3D disc to date. Certainly my favorite non-animated movie as far as 3D is concerned. (Although there was obviously a lot of CGI in use, but you know what I mean.) Such gorgeous imagery with great depth and a few pop-out scenes to appease that crowd. One in particular caught me off guard and made me jump a bit. Although to be fair, I'm not sure if that had to do with pop-out as much as just being unexpected. It was such a quick cut that I'm not sure how much it popped off of the screen. I won't spoil it here, though. You'll know it when you see it. There were a lot of scenes where I just had to pause the movie to take it all in. Literally breathtaking cinematography. The story itself is also very moving and inspirational.

EDIT: Also, it was nice to see the deleted scenes were in 3D as well. I don't recall any of my other movies having 3D deleted scenes. I didn't check out the other 3D extra on the disc yet.

Yup, certainly one of the best 3D movies to come along since Hugo and Avatar. Make sure you watch the extras. Quite amazing how they did some of the scenes. Is it the best movie of the year--hardly, but it's an engaging story. Somewhat tedious to watch at times, but the 3D makes up for that. And as you say above, there are a few pop outs that are startling, especially when they switch from 16:9 to 2.35:1 for several minutes and overlap the two perspectives. As you say it was a quick cut and worth rewatching several times.

3D done right in my opinion. Screened it last night. My wife gave it a 10 out of 10.... I felt they developed the characters to much, only in that it ate up a lot of time and did not develope the characters all that much anyways.

I should watch it again. I was grumpy as I had to switch my players out as the PS3 gave me a darn Encryption key out of date error and would not play the BD at all.

Played fine on my old 3D Panasonic player.

Liked the film and loved the 3D photography. It looks great on my 70" Sharp AQUOS TV but once again the 3D enthusiast continues to get screwed with having to pay for a 2D, DVD and Digital Copy of the film they don't want or need.

Watched most of it last night, will finish the rest tonight. I thought it was really good 3D and the cinematography was great although I wonder how much of it was CGI? Whatever, it was very nicely done and a very worthy 3D purchase, IMHO.

Weirdest thing happened when I went to watch the rest of the movie. The projector was telling me that the ratio was 1920x1004. The movie started and I was able to scene select, but when I did the 3D was so messed up - like watching a half SBS flick that was poorly done. I ejected the disc, threw it back in and all was back to normal. Anyone else experience something like this? I'm not sure if it's a projector thing, a blu ray player thing or otherwise.

Heh watch the extras on the 3D disc and you will be SHOCKED at how much is CGI and how well it is done. At least I was...

And then the extra about the Tiger on the other disc...

The trick with the tiger is trying to find the shots where he's not digital. They really did a hell of a job on him.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mister Anderson.
