PC Richards doesn't typically list their high end products online (hence no VT50 either)

Thanks! My local BB has been very tough on price matching, so we will see what they will do.

I checked at the PC Richards on 23rd Street in Manhattan, they confirmed this price by checking their system. But they also told me that it was completely sold out in the city and discontinued.
He also said that he couldn't arrange to have an order shipped to me from a more distant store.
Only a couple of other stores (outside of the city) showed stock levels of 1 or 2 units, some of which he said were probably display models, most stores just showed "zero" inventory.

I went across the street to Best Buy and they were willing to go as low as $6,700 or $6,800 (I forgot what the manager said). When I showed him a print out of the picture you posted he said that he would match that price.
When I insisted that I was looking for a better price, he said that that was as low as he was willing to go.
I even mentioned that I have heard reports of other Best Buys going as low as $5,100, but he didn't care.

Yeah, I couldn't get the Best Buy by me to get down to $5100 but they did get close. When I was in PC Richards yesterday they said that inventory was getting low, but that it was not discontinued yet. You should be able to get the tv shipped from another store as long as that store isn't holding it for a customer who has money down on it (or if it's a display). I'm sure if you offer to buy it on the spot that they would work something out for you. If you can get it through Best Buy, that might be better because you get the calibration, in home delivery, and wall mounting all included (if you're a silver rewards member). When I was at Best Buy, they also did not say that it was discontinued or that inventory was low. I don't know if the Best Buy you went to was a Magnolia or not, but I've had my best experiences with price matching with those guys first and then I've never had a manager say he couldn't do a price they quoted me.

What would you guys go with.

Seating distance is ~14 feet

Sharp Elite 70" or Sharp Quatron LC-80LE844U?

I am confident that the Elite has the better picture quality overall but at my sitting distance will the extra 10" be very significant?

I went to Almaden BB San Jose, CA store and been told nothing in stock for 70" and if anything will come will be the next year only if ever.
So, I even didn't ask for the price, while on floor model it's on sale for $7k and not below that mark

I actually printed the pages that showed some members were getting the 70" for $5100-5300 and the general manager in my local M store in Ohio matched the $5300. At first he said there was no way they could sell the TV for that kind of price and they looked on the Internet to see if anyone was selling it for that and there was no one so I suggested he call the manager of the Danbury CT. store to confirm and said he did not want to get is a pixxing contest with another store and just matched it. Two weeks later there were more posts saying they had got it for $5100 and the GM gave me a $200 credit all just off the posts here. I guess I owe somebody here big time. This TV is beyond amazing. Good luck.

Try Best Buy in Danbury CT, Value Electronics and Cleveland Plasma. If they don't give you that number tell them your budget allows for no more than 4k and ask if anyone there is able to authorize that price for a sale right NOW. If you plan on buying other items and/or financing let them know - you want to entice them to make a small sale as much as possible.

I was able to get the 70" Elite from Best Buy for $5100 by taking in copies of the discussion on this forum. I live in Ohio. Is Cleveland Plasma willing to match that price? If what I have read that the dealer cost is $4600 that would still be more than a 10% margin on the TV. I have been asked several times through PM to provide my receipt to help out some members and have contacted their BB stores to work out a similar deal.

That would be just under 10% margin. I think you meant to say that would be over a 10% mark-up. Either way, an atrocious profit for that segment of the business. I would consider it reasonable for any dealer to say no to that.

$500 profit on a TV is damn good and all the current Elite's are grossly overpriced and every review has stated the same! Panasonic has a new ZT series coming out as thier flagship model. For 2013 Elite prices need too come down considerably! When Pioneer had Elite's they weren't over double the cost of a base model.

$500 profit on a $5000+ TV is not good. I have no idea how you came to that conclusion. With the costs associated with carrying an inventory of $5000 TV's, a 10% margin rate is nowhere near what it needs to be to stay in business. Keep in mind, you are not going to move 1000 of these a week. You would be lucky to sell 10% of that. The Elite is probably overpriced, I'll give you that. But it cannot be anywhere near 10% margin, if you want their dealers to remain in business. Also, the ZT series will be more expensive than VT, so it kind of contradicts your point.

Correct the ZT series will be more expensive, but will be no where near the ridiculous prices for the Sharp Elite's. They will be slightly more expensive than the VT's. You can currently get a VT65 from BB for $2900 and it matches the PQ of the Elite. Better color accuracy with slightly less deep blacks at $4,600 less than a lot of the Sharp Elite dealers are asking for the 70in. $2,600 less than most dealers are asking for the 60in. Some retailers have sold the VT65 for $2,600.

In todays market $500 profit on a TV is very healthy! If they weren't so expensive they would well more from bulk sales. Also dealers don't just sell 70in. Elites in their store. they sell a variety of products. Bottom line a $3,000 markup on a TV that costs a dealer $4,500 is absurd.

Rumour has it that the next gen sets will be 4K at a slightly higher price coming in the summer. If this is the case my complaints will stop entirely. I said a year ago at the price of these sets they should be 4K. If they were smart they would produce 4k and keep making 1080p sets at a more reasonable price.

$500 is healthy on a $2000 TV maybe. I'll assume you do not work in retail.

Like you say, I wouldn't think that $500 amounts to a lot. I've often been wondering about the cost/pricing model. Given everything that a retail outfit needs to worry about these days: returns, open-box returns, and shipping back and forth from manufacturer, duking it out with customers, storage, floor display space, models going stale, ......this is one industry I'm absolutely glad to have no part of.

WARNING: You have now entered a no @#$%tard zone. Please gather your anti-vaccine propaganda nonsense and slowly back out the way you came in.

Some of the points you bring up are exactly why 10% margin on premium models is not enough. Given that you know this, how is it that you think 1% would be adequate?

I don't, and I didn't say that. PRO-630HD did. This is one of the reasons that AVSforum needs to allow compound multi-quotes by default, so that the comment chain is preserved. I'll go back and explicitly put in a compound multi-quote by hand so you can see that, but please be careful with your targets.
