excuse me for playing Devils advocate - but since when is paying close to $4000 for a TV an "incredible" price?

I love avs forum but definitely feel that there are folks on here who are pretty much pr for the sales guys.

You cant put a price on happiness. And there is no soap box here for vendors but when you need em to come through they usually do so people are showing appreciation.

I'm not a vendor or sales person. It's incredible because that's the lowest price I've seen. You can't expect the Elites to drop down to 2k. It's like you can't expect a Mercedes SLS AMG to drop to 50k, but if you can get it for 150k, that's a great deal.

What, you don't know how to just call them up yourself and ask them what their current price is?

The best prices have been at or near 4000/6000 for the two sets. When it's materially different (if ever) it will be news. Until then it's same old same old.

How is the Sharp Elite compared to the Philips 46PFL9706 Moth Eye?

Is the 60" still a little over $4k? Last time I checked (a few months ago) it was hovering around $4400.

I don't know that anyone would clasify a puny 46" panel as home theater grade or that Philips has ever made anything that could compete in the consumer market for N. America. Certainly has never been a consideration in the flat panel shootouts in the past several years though I don't think they had anything below 55" in the mix.

The tech sounds interesting but 46" is so ten years ago and lacking in HT IMMERSION in LCD's. May look great but can any 46" panel make one go WoW? I don't think so.

Wondering - what's the likelihood that the 70" will drop materially in price? And when? $6k is tough to swallow. Wondering if anyone thinks $5k will happen? $5500?

Long-time reader. First time poster!

I am torn between the Pansonic GT50 and the Elite 60". A blueray disc of Mission Impossible looked incredible on the Elite but the non HD cable programming looked terrible on the display. Alot of what my family will be watching will be nonHD cable programming.

But you dear reader probably don't care about that.

Anyone who's purchased from Cleveland Plasma: did SharpElite honor your warranty? How long did delivery take? I was hoping to see a 2012 refresh so 2011 models would come down but I guess that's not to be....

This is just my opinion.

Don't bother buying a new GT or Elite unless you are going to feed it HD signals.

If that's not an option, be prepared to also have to buy a video processor to clean up the picture. Most modern TVs don't do a very good job with poor content.

I wonder if we will see a price drop on the Elite because of Sharp's recent financial losses? I doubt it but then I could at least consider purchasing one smile.gif.

the losses if anything will make them firm up prices, not drop them. Sharp like Sony and Samsung is trying to enforce MAP and other associated price limits and for once they have learned that
if you give it away, a loss is what will result. The mark up in the panel is where your negotiating power remains.

I have not used my warranty so can't confirm anything there, although I don't know why there would be an issue.

On delivery time, I called and ordered on a Monday and it was in my home on that Thursday. I live on the west coast.

There is no logic in buying an Elite and then supplying 480 SD Turdvision to it - A Turd is a Turd and simply doing the math of SD it doesn't matter if you have a Holy Grail Panel it'll remain a Turd because of the source. Even the best after market Video Chips costing thousands extra have little impact at improving 480i.

In this day and age there is virtually no reason to have to view anything but HD virtually every channel is replicated in an HD version via Comcast/DirectTV et al.

Save your money to commit to HD SOURCE and then buy an Elite as you might as well have a Turd TV if SD is the primary source save 6 times the money with SD but get 6 times the PQ with HD+ELITE. Sort of buying a Ferrari and then not driving it because you cannot afford to fuel or service it. Spend the money on SOURCE first (HD).smile.gif

I don't agree - most of these losses likely have nothing to do with underpricing inventory - especially the Elite lines but instead currency exchange issues that have adversely impacted many Japanese Companies and let's not forget they walk a thin line of price fixing at the same time as they have repeatedly paid heavy penalties for price fixing numerous times during the past ten years. I say that if Sharp keeps this as a Boutique panel priced the way it is that will be the biggest mistake they have ever made.

Lets not forget the history of Sharp - their foundation has NEVER been high end and in fact before they committed everything to LCD over ten years ago they were a regular CRT budget line filling the budget TV shelf space at stores like K-Mart. Also, when they debuted all their large LCD's the past 7 years they eventually have cut them in HALF. Stay with a boutique panel gets one reputation but it doesn't really garner a profit line as the volume is minuscule. ELITE Type panels have not worked for any TV builder to-date.

Panasonic ONYX = DEAD
Pioneer ELITE = DEAD
Fujitsu - at one time the Mercedes of Plasma = DEAD
Sony XBR = DEAD or evolving to Chinese rebadging

They and others have fallin to the wayside or the electronics gutter - They all stopped making a profit as boutique lines. Let the technology do it's trickle down and the consumer benefits and hopefully they can survive otherwise Samsung and the Chinese will rule the future. Ouch!smile.gif

Bottom Line is that BUSINESS AS USUAL isn't going to garner profits and raising prices or keeping them HIGH and crossing one's fingers won't work - there's no business logic to that at all. Unless one desires to face bankruptcy staying the course is the path of bankruptcy for certain. Unless you've got your hand out for a Gov't Bailout no business has ever survived that logic to do business another day. I look for some major restructuring in the months ahead and I bet that the Elite Tech will trickle down along with pricing in the future where Volume Sales rules not Boutique sales with petty profits that are meaningless.

If anyone is interested, the Magnolia in the Best Buy located in Rockville, MD had their floor model 70" Elite on sale for $4999.99 on Saturday, August 18, 2012. Don't know if it is still there.. Good price, if you are willing to buy the floor model. They also told me all of the home theater furniture was an additional 30% off the clearance price, as they were remodeling and it all had to go. I am thinking you could haggle on the Elite a little too...

For the 70"? I find that very difficult to believe. That is below the price from the distributor. Maybe prices in the Mid-West are lower.

Wow. As someone posting and helping people n this forum for 10 years I was called a liar?

I reviewed my elite Monday. After tax and blu ray player was $5803 and $245 in best buy gift cards (rewards one points should credit in 30 days ). 60 day return policy. They also gave me (separately) the miragen os3 omnipolar side/surround at "cost" on close out.

Of course this included delivery, help moving my old dlp, assembly of stand, and inspection. I did give the drivers some water, and chips, and frt for their help. Thy refused cash.

The store on Michigan ave was $5650+tax (not!!! With the blu ray). North avenue was much better as above. Store in suburbs offered to beat it by $50 and lower tax but I was already there and felt like I should be honest and not "return rev
Buy" to save 2% in tax and $50 . So really I could have saved if I wanted to drive 25 miles another $125

Walk in with credit card car and say I will buy this now. I am sure they can look up the transaction on 8/18/2012 11am Bb on north avenue Chicago 60614.

Why would I lie?

SJCHMURA dont sweat it. that person obviously thinks he knows more than he does. If he had, he would have read in the threads (if he actually reads) that BB cost on this unit for the 70 is under $4400 and the 60 is just under 3200

you got a great set, who the F cares if someone else is jealous of your purchase. Enjoy it
