For what it is worth, I ended up with both the 642 and 650 at my house (Long story). Comparing them back to back, and a lot of adjusting, the 642 was noticeably better. Biggest difference was better shadow detail and better off angle viewing. I really wanted the 650 (the extra 1.5" in width made a difference where it sits in our room)

I was looking at the LC-80LE642 in Costco and trying to work out why the pricing was what it was, because feature-wise, the set's pretty good, and size-wise it's great. Close inspection of the screen, at least to my eye, revealed a PenTile pattern (left), rather than RGB stripe (right):

I think it was RGBW, though it might have been RGBG.

I couldn't tell if it was one of the newer diamond patterns they use on Samsung phones now.

It did not look like it was Quattron-style, where there are four subpixels (RGBW) in the space of a full pixel, but rather the more typical (read: cheaper to make) PenTile where you only get two subpixels (RG or BW) per full pixel.

Disclaimer: for most people this is totally fine. Don't be turned off by this alone. For 99% of all normal TV material, it's not really visible at a normal viewing distance. I'm tempted myself in spite of the display, but I want to use this as a computer monitor as well, and in my experience, PenTile is just not nice for text unless the resolution is very high. Pentile is probably fine on a 4K TV, for instance.

Anyway, if fine text is something you want to display with this, be sure to test it out (take a laptop to Costco or something and feed HDMI into the TV) before you buy it. I guess you could buy and try at home, but even though Costco has great return policies, it's a massive hassle and not really fair to Costco to make them re-sell it as open-box.

YMMV.

I "bought" a TV from toplinetvs.com and it is now 21 business days later and still no TV.  Every time I email the guy he replies that they are "backed up".  I was stupid enough to send him cashiers check as he promised me free delivery, 5% discount and 5 year warranty.  Do not buy from them or you will lose your money.

I don't really feel sorry for you. You should always only buy from authorized dealers and, well, I mean... just look what you did. What honest reputable dealer asks for a cashier's check? Did your brain work for even a fraction of a second during the whole transaction or did you only have your eyes on the price tag?

Current HT setup:

Samsung UN65F6300 65" LCD HDTV, Polk CS20 Center, 2x Polk Monitor 75T Fronts, 2x Polk TSI300 Backs, Polk PSW110 Subwoofer.

I have a feeling you will have to find out location and telly for local law enforcement....mail fraud. Wire fraud is federal offense. Sorry but I don't think anyone has recommended. Rollins as a source for these with any kind of track record at all that resound respectable dealer. Regards

No need to kick the guy when he's down. Pretty damn rude, honestly.

I'm guessing nobody has successfully purchased a TV from these clowns at toplinetv's.com ??

I tried to purchase a few of them due to their obviously low pricing... but for some odd reason, the seller wouldn't take cash or credit card in person at time of pickup! I offered to come pick up a 65" ZT, a 60" ZT, and (2) 55" VT's... went back and forth all day Friday about it, and when I asked if I could come get them in person, no reply... until this morning. The reply I got was: "Nope,, sold out, told you i had real buyers."

This guy is a pure scam artist, huh?

Here's his current bait pricing:

  • Panasonic TC-P65VT60 - $1849
  • Panasonic TC-P60VT60 - $1649
  • Panasonic TC-P55VT60 - $1299
  • Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 - $2499
  • Panasonic TC-P60ZT60 - $1999
  • Panasonic TC-P65ST60 - $1799
  • Panasonic TC-P55ST60 - $1225
  • Panasonic TC-P50ST60 - $975

See them here: http://toplinetvs.com/Panasonic/Panasonic.aspx

jrhunkler-

I would only buy from a reputable company that has a good return policy. Saving a few hundred here or there won't make a difference if something is seriously wrong with your TV.

Builds: Maelstrom 21 Ottoman Build, Dual Opposed MFW's x 2, Statements, SEOS-12/TD12M x 5.

Do the 80 inch Sharp TVs have in-home service? Sending it back for repairs would be crazy eek.gif

Vizio seems to require the 80 inch panel to be returned for service...

I am thinking of getting this TV as the Costco price went down to $2,600.

Can the owners please give the dimensions of the stand? This will be sitting on a 60" wide stand and I plan to have it sit off-center (to make it center to the viewing area).

Thanks.

The ONLY difference is that the 650 series is a little slimmer in depth and the lenght is almost 2 inches less than the 642 series as the bezel is slimmer on the 650 series.
So the 642 (80") and 650 (80") are both full array?

It is a Play on words, none of Sharps unit have ever been Full Array Local Dimming, only the Elite Panels sharp built for Pioneer where.

Some of the Sharps where Back lit, but they act just like an edge lit TV so it does not really matter.

I heard the Sharp 80" and 90" are back lit. Doesn't that make a difference? Their 70" and 60" have the white spot issue same as Vizio.

This is from their website, which I just linked over to after reading your post:

Every once in a while, quite inexplicably, things actually go according to plan.

It may have expired, but they start a new domain every few mos. I believe that guy Roman who used to post on here years ago, is one of the people involved with starting these bogus sites.
