I'm currently looking for a 55" set and noticed yesterday that the HX929 is on sale in the Magnolia section of Best Buy for $2499. It includes a free 3D kit also. I've seen mixed thoughts on this set because of the "crease" issue.

Could I get some advice on whether this is a good price?

Thanks.

Yes, it's a good price. However, does BB have a good return policy?

That's an amazing price!! I paid $2550 from Amazon..

At that price, with a 3D kit, take it and run!! .. Just make sure it's one of the later builds [ August 2011 or newer IIRC ] as Sony seemed to have fixed [ to a great extent ] the crease issue on these sets!

Is there a way to tell what the build is at the store? Is it labeled on the outside of the box?

I will check the box once I get home.. but I don't think the build date is listed on the box itself.

However, it's really easy to check this at the store. Just remove the four white clips, lift the box cover, and check the date at the back of the TV.

In fact, you can request the guys at BB to do it for you before they even bring it out!

Goodluck!

No. It's on a tag with the S/N on the rear left of the set at the bottom.

And it wouldn't matter because I don't think Best Buy keeps any in the store. They get shipped from warehouses...at least that's the case in NYC. I almost caved and bought one from Best Buy when they had what I thought was a good discount. Lucky for me, they didn't stock them and I wanted it that day. Plus I thought I could get it home myself on the subway (it wouldn't fit in a cab). That would have been a disaster. And I wound up paying a much lower price when I did buy and I bought it from an independent dealer (I hate buying anything from the chains.)

That's a very good price. I paid less than that (but without the 3D kit) and the price dropped a bit more after I bought, but since then, the price has gone up substantially.

My set had no crease and no banding. It does bloom, but it's only really noticeable on title sequences and that's a design flaw, not a manufacturing flaw in any case.

And unless Sony is going to surprise us later in the year, there's no new XBR for 2012, so unless you want to wait until 2013 (or go with a different brand), I'd grab it.

It seems to be an in-store Magnolia sale only. They also seem to have the Samsung 55 8000 series on sale for $1999 or $2029. Looks like the markdowns of last year's models is starting to happen.

Do you guys think the 929 could end up getting to the sub $2,000 price range?

The word out of CES was that Sony is not releasing another XBR set in 2012. If that's accurate, I don't see the price falling below $2K until January of 2013 when new sets are announced again. But if that's not true and a replacement set is coming, I can see the price falling below $2K as soon as availability of the new model is known.

The strange thing about this is that it was reported here that Best Buy decided many months ago not to carry the HX929 any more, supposedly because of the problems people were reporting. They replaced them on the floor with a Sharp Elite model. So was that report wrong or were these models "stuck" in inventory so BB brought them back or ?

When did they start offering the 3d kit? I traded by VT30 in for the 55HX929 last week, and it was $2499, but they weren't offering the 3d kit.

This is a great deal and it ends tonight! I traded my 55VT30 for the 55HX929 at BB a few weeks ago and paid $300 more. I called today and they are going to price match guarantee and refund me $300

From Slickdeals webiste. I am interested in the 65hx929, but they posted a deal for the 55hx929 where it maybe possible to get amazon to pricematch. They also have the 65hx929 for $4200, which is the cheapest I have seen it:
From slickdeals:

Sony XBR 55HX929 + 3D Narnia bundle $2263 Amazon
Not the best deal. But for those looking to purchase this TV

Price match to US appliance $2147 (you need to add to cart and add shipping address to see this price)

amazon adds $90 white glove delivery
Narnia 3D starter 101
$75 promotion (appears in final checkout page for the TV + Narnia bundle)
(seems to be unadvertised)

Total 2147 + 90 + 101 - 75 = 2263

Ditto on the PM request. I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on 65hx929 at more than 3x the cost of the 55nx720. I know they are not comparable in quality, but that's a very big leap. That being said, I'd buy the 65 today at $4200 direct from Sony (and not from a US Appliance type dealer).
