Generally speaking, when is the best time of year to buy a high end plasma? I've heard black friday deals are only for low end models. What about superbowl? Specifically I'm looking at a 60"-65" GT50 or 65VT50. I just don't want to "settle" for a GT only to see the VT for the same price a few months later. Thanks.

It used to be spring or summer, if you were willing to buy last year's model and hunt for the best deals, with the smaller screen sizes being spring and the larger ones summer. Sometimes the flagship Panasonic 65" wouldn't hit the market until as late as August and that was the best time for a killer close out deal on last year's flagship.

It's still true that prices drop on the equivalent model set when the new model comes out. That's why prices for the Panasonic ST30 series are dropping through the floor right now. But what has changed is many of the manufactures controlled their inventory much better this year so the sales aren't always as good. That's what is happening with the High end Samsung's for sure this year. The best deals on the top size 64" models (7000 and 8000) are $400-600 worse than what they were around the end of the year, and have been holding to that price even with next year's models available.

I set out to get a close out Samsung and ended up drifting toward Panasonic this year specifically for this reason, after tracking the lack of significant price drop on the Samsungs for 6 weeks as inventories got scarce. There many still be some super last minute close outs on them if you hunt well and are okay with not getting fixated on any one model.

Good luck.

Thank you for the info! I'm really hoping to get a 65VT50 for under $2800.

Maybe for $3200. I think $2800 might work for GT50

I would think you could get a 65GT50 for $2500 by years-end.

Amazon dropped the price of the 65GT50 to $2895 yesterday. I was trying to hold off until later this year for $2700 but the optical block problem on my Sony KDS-60A3000 just gets worse almost by the day. I pulled the trigger yesterday.

Panasonic stops production toward the end of the year and starts up the new version. You can't wait too long. I made that mistake with the VT30.
