Congrats Warren, it's a great TV. I got my Sharp Elite home today from Aurora, IL about 250 miles away and I felt a little silly going such a distance for a TV, but Dallas to Indianapolis is definitely a bit further. You will love the TV.

lol...I was in Chicago a couple of weeks ago for work and saw( and thought buying) that Sharp TV in Aurora..it was $1557 then ( no remote, glasses, or manuals)

I prefer plasma picture technology...viewing angles etc...so I passed on it

At the time I didnt know anything about the Conn's clearance deal of the F8500

It was somewhat of a fluke...as I knew I was going to be in Texas for the holidays

As it were...this Conns location was about 5-6 miles aways from a Buddy house that I am going to be spending a few nights with over the holidays

Warren,

Congrats on getting your Sammy!
Did you get the 64" F8500??
I went ahead and purchased a 60VT60 for a price I could not pass up from Amazon (details in the VT60 deals thread.) Mine will not be delivered until 1/4/14. We may need to have an Indy plasma face off if I ever get mine calibrated properly.

Happy Holidays!

not anywhere close to the $1620 I paid

it stands to reason that a decent improvement..in the same size...will be at least double what I paid

I will use that money...even if its a slight downgrade in picture quality of the F8500 vs what is coming in 2014...to upgrade( possibly) my prepro from an Onkyo 5508 to a Yamaha CXA5000

that extra $1700( or so) would be far better spent on sound...to me audio and video are both of 50/50 importance

You won't be disappointed with your purchase once you see what CES has in store for plasma.

Though I am an employee of Magnolia Home Theater, the views and opinions I express on this forum are those of my own and not my employer.

Trying to decide between a store display from Conns on the 64", a 60-65" ST or VT, or possible 65S64 that may show back up in stock at Sams next week...

I'm sure that 64 inch Samsung display has got to be dirt cheap, so as long as the hours on it aren't insane and there's no IR anywhere, it would be tough to decide between that and the 65S64. One thing's for sure, there is no shortage of choices in what are probably the last of the great plasmas anymore right now (LG excluded, blech).

agreed

for what I paid

even if plasma is dead for 2014( or perhaps the year after)...I am still good with my decision

By the time I a ready to upgrade again in 3-4 years..perhaps when prices of the next "thing" will be close to what I paid this time around

if you like the Samsung...and there is nothing wrong with it...got for it

If you prefer the Panasonics...I would wait a bit

I give them 2-3 months and there will be some low pricing on the VT's as they clear inventory...possibly ZT's as well

I wouldn't wait for months on the Panny's. Stock is already drying up and if nothing new comes out at CES that bests the Panny it will make them even more wanted.

Sony and Panasonic just terminated their OLED development partnership as well, so it's not looking like things are going to improve much for any display technology any time soon.

Everyone will happily sell you pointless 4K LCDs, though smile.gif

In 2-3 months there will definitely be some decent clearance prices, but it will be near impossible to even find a display at that point. New-stock VT's are already getting thin.

Terminating the development partnership may actually be a GOOD thing. If they're done developing this panel maybe they are close to production. I HIGHLY doubt that it means they are abandoning OLED. They are simply going it alone from this point on.

"After 18 months, the Japanese companies have reportedly dissolved their joint effort, stymied by technical hurdles. Instead, they'll focus instead on 4K ultra HDTVs." Story says "insurmountable" technical hurdles at that. The partnership was SUPPOSED to end AFTER they got the panels out.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57616297-93/sony-panasonic-said-to-have-ended-oled-partnership/

Besides, Sony NEVER has good timing. They jump out of some tech too quickly and stick with other tech far too long.

Fact remains, until OLED seriously moves forward and comes down in price, and after Samsung is done with plasma. Most of what's left at the store is gonna be crap or crap plus gimmicks and gigantic sizes for a while. At least in the high end TV space. The mass market LCD range will soldier on as it always does. If you want the best TVs there's gonna be for a while and don't care about 4K, the time to buy and hold is now.

the fact that that they were( and still are) losing money on their Tv business probably doesn't help

by the way...just to make sure you understand how far BB can be off on price

this weeks deals

Samsung 75F6300...Frys...$1999...Best Buy $2897

Samsung 55f8000...Fry's $1399...Best Buy $2199

this scenario never seems to repeat it self in the other direction

I think you underestimate the volume they do. Besides that, they are at the same price as Amazon 99.9% of the time.

perhaps I thinking there is always inventory at Magnolia AFTER everyone else is long sold out....and making the assumption that the situation will continue....cool.gif

I think you are under estimating the volume that regional players, like Frys sell

if the stacks of sold Samsung 75F6300 TV's, waiting for customer pick up at three different fry's in the last few days, is any indicator....I think you are under estimating the volume they do on a regional level at a price $900 below BB

..as I recall several posts ago you said that didn't happen....."hyperbole"...being a word you used...

really?..lol.....smile.gif

as for Amazon...you have the tax issue working against BB there....and they price match as well on TV's and toilet paper, I hear
Though I have never done it..I hear they don't make you jump through 10 hoops and give you the "who's on first " scenario

I can almost understand that...since they don't have a storefront

what I don't understand is local B&M not knowing..or saying they don't...what other major B&M stores are doing in the area

Ugh. Here we go again.

I know roughly how much volume these TV's do as a whole. I also know what Best Buy's market share and inventory levels are. So I think my estimates are probably fairly accurate. I do err on the side of caution, so if I say they will be out of VT by "x" date that probably means you have a couple more weeks. I'm just trying to light a fire for those that wait until the last minute.

The tax advantage that Amazon benefits from is diminishing every day. The data suggests that absent this advantage customers are less likely to assume the internet is always cheaper. Also, they do make you prove that someone is cheaper. They also have a number of restrictions as to who they match.

[Edit] I'm just not going to get into the pricing argument with you again. I simply can't share enough to really explain how it works. Just know that it's not quite as dubious as you seem to think.

Though I am an employee of Magnolia Home Theater, the views and opinions I express on this forum are those of my own and not my employer.

The bottom line on the matching subject and why Best Buy may seem to just act as if they're "oblivious" to what the local Conn's, Fry's, whoever might be doing, is that BB is a national retailer. So even if they don't have the best price in a given region, they'll make that up somewhere else where they are the price leader. And I don't know how advanced BB's logistics management is, but I would also think that inventory could be reallocated from one region to another as demand fluctuates for a given product. Or they can OMS product from one store to another to fill a customer request.

So while a product might be stagnating in X market because Conn's is dumping F8500s at 50 percent of the current retail or whatever it may be (and no one even knew about that little deal til I mentioned it here, even with as big a retailer as Conn's is and as many people as there are on this forum), it's safe to say it's picking up that slack somewhere else.

I'm not taking sides here or saying BB shouldn't compete in those situations, I'm just saying I understand why they probably don't have to.

Would be interesting to find out what percentage of clients `Bargain', versus what percentage are like my mother, and pay the going price?
My chum was in BB the other day manipulating pricing when a customer came in to talk with his salesman, and purchased $25,000 worth of Video and Audio equipment in 15 minutes without questioning the pricing! Now if only, lets say, 15% bargain, versus 85% that don't, I don't think BB is really going to worry about the 15% that much unless you do a fair amount of purchasing from them. Oneses, twoses I don't think they'll care.

Yeah, and electronics are one thing. Being in the auto business, it REALLY surprises me when people don't bother haggling on a car. I mean, negotiating is as American as apple pie, you just expect everyone is going to ask for SOMETHING off. But there are those people who either see that you're offering a good value or simply don't want to be bothered with the back and forth. Happens a lot with foreign buyers too who are getting such a bargain on the exchange rate, they don't really give a damn.

I'm sure you know best, but I'd be surprised if Samsung does not show a plasma with deeper blacks than the current F8500. I know I'm a fan of brighter plasma TVs, but if Samsung can maintain the brightness and accomplish blacker blacks this would be the TV that would please a lot of video experts and normal consumers. Not sure if we'll know at CES, but once these new TVS get in the hands of the calibrators, professional reviewers and appear in the shootout we'll know for sure what we have.
