I walked into my local target this weekend (Midway St Paul location on University AVE) and found a $5 Blu-ray section

Some movie titles I saw were

Red Heat
An Innocent Man
Hostage

plus many more. looked to be about 35 movies in total

Strong or weak in the end we are all dead

The one near Tucker, Ga. sure didn't unless they had already sold out and filled the rack with something else before I got there, though there was a fairly large selection of DVDs for $4.75, so picked up the two disc set of The DaVinci Code since I'm ambivalent about the extremely minor visual differences I can see between a good up-scaled DVD and 1080P BD except for large scale movies like Robin Hood, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.. I did get An Innocent Man BD for $4.49 the other week from Amazon though with free shipping since I bought enough other stuff to meet the minimum.

Interesting. I've picked up a few movies in that price range recently at Target, including...

The Ninth Gate - Haven't watched it yet, so can't comment on xfer quality.

T2 Skynet DTS-HD edition - Somewhat soft-lookin image for BD, but this is still a pretty good ride. (Make sure the case says DTS-HD, rather than ES for best sound.)

Planet Hulk - Story drags a bit, and animation is not the best I've seen, but not a bad deal for Hulk/Marvel completists. Disc also includes a couple Marvel mocoms and a Hulk-related episode from the "Wolverine & the X-men" series, though the PQ was rather poor on these extras.

Stargate (older Extended Cut) - Fun flick. PQ is ok, I guess.

Couldn't find a $5 BD section at my local Target. But they did still have 9th Gate, Stargate, T2 and a few other films at that price.

I wouldn't mind Red Heat for $5 - I'll check it out, thanks.

This $5 disc is the older Extended Cut release btw, and it has many of the same kinds of picture quality issues as the Close Encounters UE (low gamma, degraded looking color, etc.).

It sounds like the newer 15th Anniversary Edition Stargate was made from a fresh new 1080p encode, and has better PQ and sound. So I'll probably trade the EC in for the newer version.

Yup, the 15th anniversary edition is the way to go. Much better transfer with 7.1 dts-hd master audio and you get both cuts of the movie.

How do you trade the EC for the newer version? I have that EC as well.

I didn't really mean "trade-in" in the literal sense, but since you asked... I don't know if Target takes trade-ins, but Best Buy will sometimes.

In January, BB was giving $5 credit towards Blu-rays for each DVD you traded-in. And I think they're doing a similar deal on games right now. (They also have some kind of buy-back program on their website which I haven't tried cuz it looks overly complicated.)

There are a couple video stores in my area that take gently used discs for credit or cash though, so I might unload the EC there (or just wait for another BB promo).

Didn't see this mentioned above, but it appears that they also have a some titles for $5 at their website if you go to their movies section and start drilling down to them, then do a search by price for $1 to $5.

FYI, It looks like alot of places (including BB and Amazon) have dropped their price on this to ~$8. So I'll be interested to give this other version a look to see how the PQ differs from the EC.

OK, so how do I know if my Stargate BD is 15th Anniversary or not? Mine will play DTS-HD Master 7.1, but it says Extended Cut on the cover. Nowhere does it say 15th Anniversary.

There is an "extended cut" edition and a "15th anniversary" edition. The anniversary edition looks like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Stargate-15th-.../dp/B002KPINY8

Looks like prices on the 15th Ann. Stargate have jumped back up again on Amazon & BB. Interesting.

Happened to see it at Wal-Mart today for $6, so thanks for the head's up as I've been wanting to get the BD if they ever got around to substantially improving it WRT the DVD.

You're welcome! Turns out it's $5.96 with site to store shipping: http://www.walmart.com/ip/12511812

The way BD pricing has been going though, it will probably be $2.96 on Black Friday.
