You can buy the Seagate Backup Plus 4TB External drive from buy.com (on their ebay page) for only $149.99. Inside you will find the ST4000DM000 drive. It is a 5900 rpm drive, which is great for a large storage drive. Just crack the case open (lots of videos on YouTube to show you have to safely do it) and remove the drive. The drive itself can be registered with Seagate to enable the warranty on it as a standard desktop drive.

I bought two of them and they shipped quickly. I have already cracked them both open, removed the drives, put the drives into my HTPC as replacements for 1.5TB drives, and placed the two 1.5TB drives into the cases the 4TB drives came in. For less than $300, I bought 8TB worth of drive space! smile.gif

I've never really thought about removing the drive from an external case before. Externals used to be much more expensive than internals. I wonder what the heck happened.

I have no idea why the externals have become cheaper than the internals - since the external drive is simply an internal drive with the addition of a case, etc. I noticed the previous ebay posting has ended and they raised the price to around $187.

It has been that way for years. Sure some places price the externals the way you would expect, but the phenomenon of externals being cheaper than internals is well known to deal-hounds. My totally unsupported guess is that external drives are purely consumer products while internal drives are much more of a business product, hobbyists making up only a small fraction of the market. Business stuff seems to always have a higher margin than consumer stuff, probably because the guy buying it isn't using his own money.

Copyright is not property, it is merely a temporary loan from the public domain.
