This deal is $60 but there is a possibility that you get some software you do not want and have to register it on line:

You might be able to throw away the Total Defense Premium Internet Security software but if you don't want to hassle with that just buy the drive with rebate for $100:

Tempting. Anyone know if it's possible to crack this one open and convert it into an internal drive?

My problem is that it involves $90 worth of rebates even though I've only had an issue with a rebate once in my life, this would somehow be the second time..

Yea, I'm not a huge fan of rebates either. Also, having done some digging on SlickDeals, apparently the rebate for the security software requires it to be activated online.

So that probably makes it difficult to uninstall then. Maybe not such a good deal after all but that is why I posted the HDD only which is still pretty decent for 3TB as it works out to $33/TB.

Thanks for the post Sammy. Rarely do these deals include Canada but this time TigerDirect.ca has the same deal. 3TB for $100 was to good to pass up esp. since I recently dropped my 2TB external and killed it. For those reading, the deal, at least in Canada, ends @ midnight tonight, July 3rd.

Glad you were able to take advantage of it even though it is not quite as good as I initially thought it was.

Fry's has a 3TB external (straight up) for $119.

Last week they had 2TB for $69. This guy...

of which they have so many I'm sure it will go back down there before long. Remember they match virtually any Internet price so it's painful to go there... passing up all of the potential bargains. smile.gif

So there's been some conflicting reports on Slickdeals regarding the security suite. Some say activation is required, others don't. A few people have made the suggestion of installing the software on a VM install.....Tempting......

I would take it out of that case as quick as possible.
I purchased one for a external USB backup for a server not even 4 months ago.
And it is already failing.
Those things run very hot. I have S.M.A.R.T. monitoring on all the drives for that server.
It has reached 138 F. Now message states:

Failure Predicted - Attribute 5 Reallocated Sectors Count,
Count of sectors moved to the spare area. Indicate problem
with the disk surface or the read/write heads.
Replace hard disk immediately.

It is recommended to backup immediately to prevent data loss.

And this is the backup.
