The 4GB Xbox 360 will be $99 at Walmart on Black Friday (or has that moved to 6pm Thursday now). Just in time for the Xbox One.

Grabbed one at Amazon when it went on sale for $99. They were all claimed in less than a minute.

Got lucky myself at Amazon. Came home, loaded Amazon and the sale went live in five minutes. I can use it until my wife finds a cabinet/TV for the Hearth room. Hopefully I won't switch back to TiVo before it really gets used... oh well eBay at worse.

Got mine, had it set up in about 10 minutes. Worked out of the box with my WMC remote control too.

Just wait. They'll all be on sale that low eventually.

I need an extender for my WMC.
May just try my local Craig's List since I don't need new.

After working in retail 30+ years I will avoid the crowds.

I'm old.
Was trained on vacuum tubes.
Most everything I've worked on is in the museum or on the History Channel.

Why don't you place an ad because you don't need the DVD drive to work or even one that has been banned from Xbox live. Might get one really cheap that way.

I just did a quick scan on Craig's list and found a few that were less than $100.

I know I don't need the DVD to work.
Didn't know about the "banned from Xbox Live" whatever that is.

But, I have seen some that...
...are called "slim".
...are called "elite".
...have the "red-ring-of-death".
...have various sizes of hard drives.
...have no controller.
...are "modded".

Since I have never touched an Xbox I have no real idea what I need and don't need as related to use as an WMC extender.
I've done a lot of things in the last 50+ years but here is one thing I haven't done.
Thanks for guiding me as an Xbox newbie.

This is my first Xbox too. I was amazed at how simple it was to set up. You will need a controller or a WMC remote to be able to set it up and use it.

You will want a Slim and you only need the 4GB version which has no hard drive. The fat/phat and elite are all the first gen style and are very loud, think jet engine, and the Slim is more recent and rather quiet. Red-ring-of-death means it isn't going to boot up unless you know how to fix them, but most of the RRODs happened on the non-slim versions so there is another reason to avoid those posts.

Getting a hard drive isn't going to hurt anything, but storage space isn't required with a WMC extender. You could get by without a controller by using a universal remote with the xbox/wmc codes. However, you could probably find a used controller for cheap at Gamestop to get the job done.

Modded means that it has been hacked in one way or another to play copied/downloaded games. Or it means someone took the case apart and added silly LED lights and custom cooling, or took a spray paint can to it.

Great reply.
Thanks.

So then, an Xbox slim is the one to get.
Don't care about with/without hard drive. Since I'm upgrading my WMC remote to Harmony 650 I could just use my old one if the price is low enough to get a Slim w/o controller. This is my current controller (or something that looks very similar). I'm still needing the red-thumb IR receiver for my Harmony.

Again, thanks.

That controller should work.

When buying a used Xbox make sure it doesn't say Console Only and no cables. You need the power brick. You could quickly lose any savings on the console when you have to buy a power supply. There are plenty of eBay and Craigslist posts like that only selling a bare console.

I have an ORtek remote that looks just like that one. It doesn't use standard Microsoft codes so it won't work on the Xbox.

Looks like I will have to have the controller with the Slim Xbox.

I can't wait for the day when I wake up and know everything.biggrin.gif
