If your going the Windows Media Center way (cablecard support, DVR, etc), I was a MVP from 2010 to 2012 and certified in it from Microsoft. I can do a remote session to help out via team viewer if needed.

Drop me a PM if your interested in help here...

I like KODI it fit my needs. I recently found this site online and although I haven't tried any of the builds, he provides a lot of details on configuring KODI.

If you are wanting to do 4k UHD disc playback etc. ..you unfortunately are going to have to look at the hardware end of things, if not don't worry about it.
Just in case you are, look at this thread:Cyberlink and Pioneer Announce PowerDVD and Ultra HD Blu-ray Drive Bundles (note the requirement for MB, CPU, Intel graphics, etc.)

Back from that abyss:
I too am a big proponent of KODI, it's an excellent piece of software with lots of flexibility (which can be complicated at first), but once you get it tailored to your specific needs, pretty much covers all bases as a one-stop shop for your entertainment.
Here's a guide that is (for the most part) finished: http://androidpcreview.com/how-to-se...ight-way/4188/

Oh, you cannot beat the price either..

Another option is PLEX, but I've never worked with it so I don't have any advice, sorry.

But let's back up a bit, what exactly are you wanting to do with said HTPC?

Actually, I love tube amps..
I play guitars through them.

Odd man out here, I have Kodi on a Remix Mini, but on my main HTPC with my audio rig, I use JRiver. I'm also using SVP 4 Pro (smooth video/motion processor).

I used Kodi and while it was nice it was a bit more of a pain.

I went to using PLEX for everything and I LOVE IT.

I can watch my content through many different devices, I use Roku's as I already have them.

My loft uses a Roku 3 to view my content, my Bedroom uses a Roku 3 to view my content, my HT uses my Xbox One. I can even stream my movies/music to my Tablets and phones remote or while at the house.

My actual HTPC just runs Plex server, and I rip my blu-rays to it via MakeMKV. I throw in a new disc to my blu-ray drive, grab what I need movie and audio formats via MakeMKV, let it put that .MKV file into a folder and its done. Plex updates across all the devices and I'm golden.
