I've heard sometimes around here that people are painting their own screen. How does this works? The painting performs as good as the commercial screens?

This would be a good thing for me as I'm working with a very low budget. I would need to paint a gray screen, with less than 1 of gain for use with a DLP projector (with 1000 lumens). I know this would increase its black level/brightness. Is it possible to paint a gray screen? How can I do it?
