I know this subject has probably been dealt with, but for CRT projectors, is there an advantage of one over the other. Someone said that 1.85 movies end up being displayed as 1.78, hence the recommendation for the latter. Thanks.

I prefer 1.78:1. It's exactly right for HDTV for one thing.

For 2.35:1 movies it's really a wash compared to a 1.85:1 screen.

Thus your only issue is for 1.85:1 movies. On a 1.78:1 screen, if you have ZERO overscan, you can see a very thin black bar at the top and bottom on some 1.85:1 movies. I say "some" because many nominally 1.85:1 movies are actually slightly unmatted to 1.78:1.

Either way, the difference is only about an inch or so at the top and bottom (for a 1.78:1 screen) or the sides (for a 1.85:1 screen with 1.78:1 material) on a 110" screen.

If you're going to have any overscan at all it probably doesn't matter. If you have zero overscan, I think a 1.78:1 screen results in the least amount of fiddling.

I'm thinking the same thing, and trying to decide between 1.78 or 1.85.

Anyone else have any thoughts??

Any 1.85 folks out there??

I don't think you are going to see enough of a difference to care about. I have my system set for between 1% and 2% overscan and there are no black bars on 1.85 material on my 1.78:1 screen. Just agreeing here in that HD is 1.78:1 and then 2.35:1, 2.55:1, 2.76:1 are going to look essentially the same with either screen. The payoff comes when you go up to 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There ,you'll see the real wide screen effect with constant height which is as "real theaters" do and a meaningful difference.
