I have 100" screen, 1.69 with Mits HC3800. DVD movies are 1.69 and most blu-ray are 2.35. When with 2.35, I put a horizontal masking on the screen (top and bottom).

What I don't know is if I buy, let's say 110" of 2.35:

Can I play dvd (1.69 format) on the wide screen? Is vertical masking all I need? Do I need to adjust the projector every time I switch playing from bluray to dvd?

You mean 16:9 (not 1.69) and 2.35:1, i.e. 16 width for 9 height, and 2.25 units of width for 1 unit of height.

Yes, you would need to zoom the projector for 16:9 content to achieve constant height and you would have unprojected areas on the sides to mask.
