It appears the 80" Portable DNP Supernova 08-85 screen is roughly 1/3 the price of a 84" fixed frame Core model with 08-85 material. Hard to believe the Core frame is worth over $1200.
I was thinking about buying a portable and cutting the screen out then building a frame to attach it to. I don't have a lot of room right now and an 80" screen would be fine for me until I can move to a larger house.

Is there a reason this is a bad idea? I just bought my first projector (Epson 5020), so I am still on a pretty steep learning curve. I am thinking this could get me a really good screen for around $750

Thanks!

...or it might. I was told by a distributor that portable version has a different backing material and that it's very much like paper, easy to tear. So it can't be used with standard tensioning systems.
