I have attached a couple of photos of my basement where the screen will be located.  It is going to go on the wall that is shared with the stairs.  From what I am reading it looks like a grey screen will be best but there are lots of options out there.  I will probably go with an Epson 3020 projector and a 120" screen.  Budget is $300 - $500 if possible but I don't want to sacrifice picture quality for a couple hundred dollars.

I'm interested in answers to this thread as well, I just pulled the trigger on an Epson 5030 today and a very similar basement area. I'll probably create a new thread but maybe someone can help me as well. I'm hoping to utilize my 55" vizio for "every day tv" and HTPC and have a drop down screen when watching a BR. My budget is right in the same ball park...but I really like the idea of Monoprice multi format fixed....hmmmm...

Sunfire Theater Grand IV, Emotiva Stealth 8, Adam powered monitors, Epik sub, Oppo DVD, Parts Express 15 sub kit, Epson projector...

Check the Elite or VAPEX screens. Also, check out Amazon for screen deals there too.

If I had the option of a fixed screen, I would definitely go with a multi-format screen.

what is the advantage of the multi format screen as opposed to just projecting the 2.35:1 image on the larger screen?  I assume it is to reduce the reflective surface area that isn't being used but does it really make a noticeable difference?

Do I need a gray screen or should I use a white screen?

Yes, to eliminate the black bars/reflective area. The noticeability depends on many variables.

Gray helps in bright rooms and with low contrast projectors. If you can control the light white is the best option.
