Which is best for widescreen viewing:

16:9, 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 screen format?

The use will be primarily DVDs with 16:9, letterbox, and 4:3 aspect ratios.

The priority being the best possible cinema experience with widescreen sources.

Thanks for your advice!

Thanks T. Jackson.

I guess it is an issue of whether you prefer horizontal or vertical black bars, and which are easier to temporarily mask with black cloth to frame the projection...

Thanks for your advice. Although there won't be any HDTV broadcasting in Europe for some years to come, it is likely that it will be in 16:9 once it finally exists. Anyways, there are many more 16:9 sources than 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. And I could always resort to a 4:3 width electic screen several intermediate rolldown heights.

Does anyone here know if an electric screen exists with 4 different height settings (lowest position at 4:3, then at 16:9, 1.85:1 and finally a setting for 2.35:1)?

Thanks guys for helping me sort this out...

Once again a great post with new revelations!

This means that you can have the ULTIMATE SCREEN!

With your choice of low gain Studiotek 1300 or high gain Videomatte 200:

- the best size utilization for each ratio -

Now if only there was a way of getting a discount on a custom twin motor multiprogramme automasking electric screen from Stewart? Anyone here related to the company's founders? At least such dreams can come true for a fortunate few.

Their pricing has got me dreaming of inventing new and improved homemade high gain screens. If you've got ideas, post them at: http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/000183.html

Unless I can come up with a great coating product to spray onto a 120" 2.35/1 framed canvas, then it will have to be a fixed M2500 with all the streaking, vignetting and hotspotting it includes for a reasonable price.
