I just got my new Da-Lite Model B matte-white screen installed this weekend. The good news is that there is no wrinkles as I've heard there might be. The bad news is that there is a strong smell coming from the screen. Has anyone else had this "problem" with a new screen? Does it go away? It is quite sickening.

Marc,

Yup smells like vinyl (had the same thing on my Stewart). Leave it down for a couple of days and the smell will go away.

Thanks Steve!

Movie watching should be a sight and sound expeerience, not a smell one too. You have set my mind at ease.

In Canada we had the god given right to watch the SCTV (sorta a canadian version of Monty python meets the nine o'clock news) show, that had on it a show called 'Doctor Tounge's 3-D House of Naked Stewardesses', broadcast in SMELL'O'VISION!! (this is where Andrea Martin, Martin Short, John Candy, etc. came from)

Marc,

Yep, I just got a new DaLite screen a month ago and the vinyl smell was strong for about 3 days, and after a little over a week it was all but gone.

I was reminded about the smell when I put together a new coffee table a couple of days ago and it had a strong laquer smell which overpowered the room.

I was given suggestions to use a space heater to "cure" the vinyl more quickly, but the thought of a house fire scared me away from that option and the smell went away to the point that it hardly smells even up close now.

Hi,

Its fairly standard (to remove toxic fumes) to heat a room that has just been painted for a few days to "bake" out the fumes, then open the room up and air it out. It would probably be a very good idea to hang a new screen in the sun outside for a few days.

Mitch,

You are kidding, right? I was counting the days until my screen arrived. I mounted the screen in what must have been record time. This baby ain't going outside anytime soon, unless I can drag my whole home theater out there with it. Hmmmmm........... http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif
