I hope to have a D-ILA projector arriving in the next ten days. My basement room in 43' x 16', which is also the kids playroom. Front projection would mean the projector protrudes from the ceiling centrally, or that the unit and its noise would be directly overhead.

I'd like to mount the projector at the edge of the ceiling, on the long axis of the room, and have a roll-down screen (manual or motorized, but a fixed screen is out of the question with little kids down there) halfway down the length of the room. The joists in the ceiling are 86" high, and with the allowance for the ceiling mount, gives me 77" of possible screen height.

Thanks in advance for any advice, regarding products out there, or alternate placement (i.e., front-proj'n) solutions.

Do a web search (I used google.com) on "rear projection screens" and out of the huge number of hits you'll find several vendors who sell thin plastic film RP material.
