I upgraded my scaler from a DVDO (great unit) to a Crystal Image (more resolution) and the ability to have aspect ratio control (something my 1031Q lacked).
Now my 4:3 images are centered in the 16:9 window box but I've got all this extra screen shining light back at me. Here's the solution:
Go to your local art& crafts store (mine was an AC Moore) and get fabric dye from "Jacquard" textile in #122 black. Its a small liquid bottle (2.25 oz).
Use a cut-in painting applicator, not a sponge brush, sponge roller or long bristle brush. These things are pads usually 2"x3" with short soft bristles. Apply generous amount and spread back & forth. Let dry overnight before rolling up (if applicable).
Hope this helps someone.
