Using seleco ht200dm. 100" diag. screen. Lots of windows. Blackout shades not an option. Semi-sheer poosible.
Talked to Stewart-they say greyhawk best for ambient light to help black rendition.
Talked to Draper-they say (although their grey screen is due soon) use silvery M2500. Higher gain to overcome light, silver to help colors and contrast.
Talked to Vutec-they say 1.3 matte VuflexPro. He thought:Grey (their grey is coming soon also) "greys out" the whites and M2500 might hot spot and can streak. And their hi-gain Pearl-Bright would be too bright.
Seems all three disagree with each other. 1.0 gain screen would give 24 foot/lamberts. Movie house is ~14, TV's are around 33? Heellpp!
Thanks
Randy

No takers, huh?
I guess the purists won't respond to the idea of lots of potential ambient light. Do I have to copy this to the dlp/dila thread?
I thought it was fascinating that I got three opposite answers from three manufacturers. It used to be they just said our 1.3 is just as good as theirs. Now it's whole different approaches.
Won't some experts step up to the plate?
Thanks
Randy

What no opinion from Da-Lite? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif They also have the HC Da-Mat, which is a matte grey screen.

At larger screen sizes I would not recommend a Greyhawk or HC Da-mat because the HT200DM is not a particularly bright projector. At your screen size, however, a Greyhawk is probably your best bet, it will absorb some of the ambient light and the optical coating will reject off-axis ambient light better than a matte screen.

BTW, not all 1.3 gain screens are the same despite what those manufacturers may say... http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif and silver will not "help your colour".

It's a bit of a compromise, because you will want good performance in ambient and dark settings. You need high brightness to overcome ambient light, which would make a gain screen of some kind a good idea with the added benefit of off-axis ambient light rejection. However, in a dark room too much gain will produce obvious hotspotting. A grey screen will help keep your black level down in ambient light and it won't make you whites look "grey" because your brain perceives the brightest part to be "white" (a bit oversimplified, but true). So the Greyhawk with it's grey backing and optical coating gives you some of both, little more gain in ambient light would be helpful, but the grey backing is also highly desireable. It will also help your black level when there is no ambient light.

Kam Fung

Kam,
Thanks for being the only one to step up to the plate. Good info. More or less what Stewart said. Why would the others, who are both making greyhawk-alikes (at least soon and they knew I could wait), recommend such differrent materials?
Anyone else have any thoughts?
Randy

I don't know why Draper and Vutec gave you such varied answers. If you talk to Da-Lite I am sure they would recommend their HC Da-Mat for the reasons I had outlined above (sans optical coating in this case). I think perhaps the fact that their grey screens have not been finished yet means that the sales people haven't been educated about its uses.

Yet another reason why I want to make my own custom screen.
Or-"one size doesnt fit all."
