Actually you will get a very slightly more constant illumination at the viewing position from a curved matte screen (illumination depends on screen/viewer distance among other things and will usually vary some 15-20% for a flat matte screen and centered viewing postion). Still, you are right in that there are no clearly visible benefits.

And yes, contrast may suffer quite a bit on a curved matte screen from internal screen reflections. This is a non-issue for high gain curved screens, though.

Thanks for the info Deron. A couple of more questions.

Did you just paint the drywall for your screen surface, or did you use something like tileboard?

What kind of paint did you use?

Did you try to integrate your front surround speakers into the curved wall you built?

I use a CRT projector (Sny 1272), will it focus sharply from edge to edge? Any trick for getting it to do this?

This sounds like it could be a great winter project for me.

What is tile board?

I painted the dry wall with a pva drywall primer and then rustoleum aluminum paint. I stayed with the drywall because of the size 80"x140". I used a oil based rustoleum paint because I had good experience with the paint.

No I did not install speakers in my screen. The center one is reflected off the center of the screen and the side speakers are on the side of the screen.

I have a 1272 and the focus with the H's was not perfect but that did not seem to matter as much as the source material. I noticed that this pj will give an excellent image with a good source coming into it. Some dvd movies I watched going through my dvdo were excellent and a few sucked.
