Optimal viewing distance for a 32" screen?

I have a 32" LCD HDTV that has a native resolution of 1080p. However, many times I will be viewing 720p content that does not get upscaled, and so remains in 720p. So, for my 32" HDTV what is the optimal viewing distance for:

1: viewing 720p content;
2: viewing 1080p content.

I've done some reading online and according to some unconfirmed sources the optimal viewing distance for a 32" HDTV is:
6.2 feet (1.89 m) for 720p; and
4.5 feet (1.37 m) for 1080p.

Are those numbers correct?
