I'm thinking of building a screen for my CRT projector. My
idea is to make it out of solid chipboard as I can get a
laminated white piece with only a slight texture, which has
a slightly shiny surface. From what I've read, a flat white
wall has a gain of around one, so would a gain of about
1.2 be realistic from a slightly shiny white surface? I'll be
using a black felt surround to mask the edges and block
the annoying AKB line from my projector.
Does this sound like a reasonable idea, or would it be
better to go for a frame with a fabric screen? Thanks.

It sounds like it could be well beyond a gain of 1.2 It doesn't take much diff in luminosity to make this difference....I would test it out before you mount it, buy it, etc....or just keep the reciept. Do a test on AVIA with the black and white needle pulses....If your current pj adjustments go way out of wack, then It could be a sign that it's not the right material. OR just look at some of your feature dvd's and play around with it...you just might like the hell out of it!

As it turns out, it is quite a high gain. My crt is only 110 lumens
and I'm getting a pretty bright roughly 80" dia image. The only
downfall is there is a lit bit of hot spotting, which is a little
irritating. Not sure if I'll keep it or not yet.
