The release seems to imply HW10, Big Brother, and VW200. No mention of VW60.

The BRAVIA VPL-HW10 is the gateway into the world of Full HD Home Cinema, but there is more. The soon-to-be-launched bigger brother of the VPL-HW10 will incorporate many high-end features previously unavailable in the upper-mid segment of the market, while the VPl-VW200 is and remains the flagship model, offering the very highest standards to those seeking to create the ultimate Home Cinema

Do you think the HW10 would have the capability to create a bright enough picture when you take into account the throw distance being maxed out?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not Jason (and I don't play him on TV either ), but using the ProjectorCentral calculator on the VW40 as a close approximation, and the lumens get quite low at the max screen size (117") provided in the calc for that model at that distance. Even accounting for an extra 10% brightness from the HW10, I think you might be hard pressed unless you use a HP screen (gain 2.0 or above). Though a 1.3 or 1.5 gain screen in a bat cave might work.

IMHO, YMMV, AFAIK, may cause dizziness, lethargy, and apathy,

Wow! My ears are about 3-4 feet from my VW40 and it's quiiiiiiiet!

Give a ballpark comparison to the VW40 while you're at it, if you would. I'm not going to trade and lose my power zoom/shift, but I am curious about image differences between the two. Hopefully (for me) they will be close enough to not make me .

The VW40 is no more on the list on SonyStyle page.

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921644515290

Definitly the HW10 is the replacement and the VW40 is out of production (only 7 months of live?).....wating the Jason review.

Bye

Shinksma,

Thanks for the feedback.
Yeah I guess it's kind of wishful thinking. The zoom position really degrades the light output when set back so far, but I've been crossing my fingers that Sony will come out with a more powerful (or more acurate Lumen rating) and mid level price point.

I guess I will probably have to go back to looking at the Epson or the Pannisonic (which appear to have some promising new entries). I just don't know how long I can wait until the new ones are shipping.

You're absolutely right I emailed the good people at Carada earlier this year, and they told me that I could upgrade to a BW 1.4 gain screen from them and snap it into my existing frame. While I'd love to eventually upgrade to something like a Stewart 130, it's just not in the cards for me financially.

OK the big question does this PJ beat all current Sony PJ's? Aside from the CineAltas of course.

It's positioned as a VW-40 replacement, below the VW-60 and -200. So I can't see this model (HW-10) outperforming everything else - it is intended to be the budget model of the Sony 1080p SXRD line, AFAICT.

Edit: And a VW-70 is rumored/confirmed to be coming out too, and has been described as the HW-10's big brother, IIRC.

Correct the HW10 is going to be the entry SXRD. The VW70 will be between the VW60and VW200.

If it's indeed a new panel >VW60, I can see PQ similar or equal to the 60 but without all the extras (power everything, convergence control, vertical stretch) which would be acceptable cost differences.

The lens is a curiousity as its shorter throw and greater range (unless I'm mistaken) so the quality is likely to be less than the 60.

I hope for a new panel with better native unless they've throttled back the optical path to not exceed the 60 in simultaneous CR and native.

I was wondering if new could beat out everything that came out before just on it being newer, compared to VW40,50,60,200. Its gonna be a very interesting review.

Sounds like the VW70 and the new JVC RS10/20 will be going toe to toe.

Geez- the suspense is killing me!

A woman is weeping over shadows on a screen, a man gets excited over ink on a page, a child is frightened over words in a book-
The mind gets caught up in the unreal and people become identified with it. But its power is such that it rules the world.

When the VW40 came out it was basically the same as the VW50 performance ... so id guess the HW10 would be basically the VW60 performance ... But maybe it uses still the VW40 panels but with a better iris to get the 30,000:1 ? ..

My guess is that it will still outperform the new Batch of LCDS based on the D7+ panels (except for absolute black level)... Cine4home measured the AE3000 at 3000:1 native calibrated D65, and i suspect the HW10 will be similar to the VW60's native contrast (7000:1)

It has convergence control (full screen +-2.0 pixels in 0.1 pixel steps) but manual lens shift and zoom according to European press release that had technical information attached. Do not know what panels it uses... but specs seemed to be the same than VW40 (0.61" SXRD, 7 um pixel size and 0.35 um inter-pixel spacing) meaning that it has same fill factor. Also refresh rate is the same 2.5 ms. Of course this could be just copy and paste from older materials but I doubt it.

I noticed this too. I have been looking to buy VW40 as they can be had cheaply now but was put off by the new really impressive sounding CRs in this year's batch of projectors. Cine4home measured VW50 (VW40 should be the same?) and it had 2200:1 native contrast and with automatic iris from 10000:1 up to 16000:1 when calibrated.

I have light walls and ceiling and wife wants white projector. Black is a no-no as well as black paint so I cannot buy any of the projectors introduced this year because they all are black . I guess that VW40 is still pretty good and really high CRs are not much use to me because to get full effect from better black levels causing higher CRs is not possible in my environment. Well, I hope so that I will not feel bad to buy technology that is already at least two years old .

Finally... I've been waiting to see how low the VW40 goes (or will go)... Am really interested in seeing the review of the new Sony...

Such decisions... Buy the old model VW40 (hopefully I can find a good deal), or get the new model (hopefully not quite at the full MSRP). Does AVSForums ever do power buys on items like this?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to the review.
