I don't think so really. More like there was probably a bit of advanced hedging going on against what the Yen vs the $A a few months ago. Perhaps next in years allocation they could go up, but by then the maybe in for discounting anyway that would offset it. But it's probably swings and roundabouts, when you look historically at currency shifts and product pricing - a bit of gamble that they would win at more often than not.

1) Would the Australian Sony site linked to in the first post of this thread sell me a projector if I have a U.S. shipping address?

2) If so, what are the cons of my buying a VW80 for $4,700 American Dollars directly from there (or buying an HW10 for $2,487 for that matter)?

I'm still working on a less costly AU solution. The only trouble is the supply of VW80 projectors has not yet ramped up, so they're hard to get. HW10 is having the same problem.

Be patient. I have my fingers crossed.

if that's the only down side i'm definitely ok with that!

can you please keep me posted via PM regarding your progress? thanks!

Remember first off $4700 is based on full Aus MSRP, not street pricing. Bytehoven has already come across some very well discounted pricing. You will get one for below $4k without all that much trouble from what I can see. Therefore also even if they would(which they wouldn't), you wouldn't want to buy from Sony Australia and pay full MSRP anyway.

Service would be a pain. But then again it's a roll of the dice, I'm on to my 5th SXRD projector and none have ever had a hiccup to date. I dare say it would be cheaper to pay to have it serviced in the US than waste the money shipping it back to Aus for a warranty claim.

It might also be worth exploring an extended service policy with some of the savings, if shipping was included.

Come on it's a global economy, and companies need to start thinking about customer support from around the globe, right?

I have been keeping an eye on (2) of the AU sellers that do international shipping. When the VW80 shows up I'll be sure to alert the thread.

Pretty unlikely. To me it would be much like when I've had to send a disc player back to the US, which even had an extra paid warranty on it. The service center didn't want to know about anything other than sending it back to a US address. I would think it would be even worse here, they are very insular with stuff like that.

IMHO, an international company like SONY should consider having a global support policy. It's probably tricky to implement.

I reckon it will be hard to get them to come to the party on items like HT gear. Things that are more designed for portability yes, especially laptops and cameras say. I imagine they probably reckon it's too much hassle to keep track of stuff globally for service support.

Had mine since Thurs. Still in box though. My weekend plans feel through so no install for me. Going to be a little while now till I get to see it due to my busy calendar.

Here's the calibration results for those interested though:

Guys there was a article i was reading a little while back that indicated that the VW80 and VW70 were 2 different units, i recal it mentioning that the VW70 was using a Xenon glode and a couple of other differences.

I have been searing for this site for the past three days and cannot find it, so it might be worth checking out

I'm afraid there's no Xenon according to Sony's feature list:

Quote:

200W Ultra-High-Pressure Lamp

The VPL-VW70 works with 200 wattage lamp. With this high wattage, the VPL-VW70 projects at a high brightness of 800lm. The high-wattage Ultra- High-Pressure lamp reproduces color accurately, beautifully, and naturally bottomless white, spectacular reds etc.

Please forgive me for this one everyone

But its about time we got a break over in Oz land on pricing

I hear ya brother! For once I don't have to be envious of US pricing on HT gear!

I am very curious about this as well. I would assume you would just need to change the input to NTSC from PAL?

My feeling is that all global models will be identical and NTSC/PAL will be handled automatically by all versions. There are plenty of Australians and Europeans with access to NTSC material and it's all be handled for years now. I wouldn't worry.

My better half just called to say the VPL-VW80 was delivered today 13/11/2008

She said "The box is enormous and no I'm not moving it"

Will post Box Opening Pictures for everyone when I find time as I am getting married this Saturday (15/11)!

I reckon HT installation is still a few weeks away but all the parts are coming together. Integra 9.9 has been shipped yesterday so I should also be receiving that shortly.

An exciting time. Been waiting since 1992 for all this to happen!

Cheers

Interesting. The VPL-VW70 thread that was updated as recent as yesterday has disappeared. Maybe the model is being pulled as well given comparisons to the VW80 and RS20 from a pricing and features perspective.

Not liking the new remote at all. The RESET button is far too close to the cursor keys and enter button for my liking.

Here comes a link to thread with almost full measurements on the vw80 done by the Swedish distrubutor of Sony projectors. His screen name is TimJ.
http://www.component.se/forum/index.php?showtopic=9724

The optics look great and the motor controls allow for exception fine control.
No contrast is measured but greyscale and gamut is measured.
Enjoy!

Nice, I'm looking to replace my HD100 which suffers from the DILA motion blur problems that's commonly noted.

I wish I lived in AUS for many reasons but not least the price you guys are getting on this machine.

Its still within budget at £4k here in the UK so I'll definitely be checking out this machine with its 120hz and dark frame insertion technologies. Nothing could be worse than the JVC for poor motion resolution

You're absolutely right! That's an unforgivable oversight on Sony's part. I think I'll send it right back. Can't have their Engineers making such a faux pas and thinking they can get away with it.

Has anyone confirmed that the VW70 and VW80 are the same? If they are not and they have removed Motion Flow or Black Frame Insertion from the vw70, then Sony is really sticking it to the USA buyers!
