Will Sony honor the warranty on the VW80 if the projector is purchased below the AUS (MSRP) of $6,999. I was always under the impression that companies like Sony, Mits. JVC would not honor the warranty if the projector was purchased from an unauthorized dealer, or in the case of SONY SURE police below MSRP. The sony style website in Australia states that the MSRP in AUS currency for the VW80 is $6,999. I have heard some people stating they got one for much less than that even by AUS rates. Does anyone know if you will have trouble dealing with Sony in case of a problem down the road. I guess it only really maters if the product becomes defective, and most Sony products I have purchased through the years have been very reliable.

The MACK warranty must be purchased and registered within 30 days of the sales invoice date.

The proper MACK warranty for the VW80 would be #1056, extending the warranty to a total of 7 years. Isn't the world supposed to end 12/2012?

Unless one plans to keep the projector beyond 3 years, the MACK warranty may not be worth it, except that is would be transferrable to a new owner.

Hi Bytehoven,

Dont worry to much about having to wait for the Sony 3 year warranty to finish. In Australia we get screwed hard and only receive a 12 month warranty on Sony products, so worst case scenario your Mack warranty will start after 12 months

Never seen any problems come out of that here with warranty. I think the dept of fair trading would have something to say about such a tactic being employed.

Here is the deal offered by Tapeworks for an extended warranty on the VW80.

RJ,

No problem. Here's what I can do:

1056 only - Regular Price $245.00. Special price for projectors via AVS - $220.00

1056 with bulb warranty combo - Regular price $325.00. Special price for projectors via AVS - $300.00.

As of right now, I don't have the discount built in to the order page so I will need to have each person email me after they place their order so I can manually adjust the pricing. I will see if I can get the discount added to the website in the near future. I'll run this special unil Jan 31, 2009.

Thanks,
Brian Pool

RJ,

Can I email Brian directly at tapeworks to be a part of this or are you pooling interested parties for him?

Have you guys dealt with Mack warranties before? are they any good when it comes to claiming?

Not sure if they are available to us in Australia but might be a better alternative to the sony extended warranty that is $545AUD for an additional 2 years

I just sent Rich an email to see if my order is one of the 6.

I got an email on the 1st saying that my cc had been approved and I haven't heard anything since. I thought I was in good shape, but now you've got me worried.

Edit: Rich just replied. My order is one of the 6.

Printed prices are wrong, do it online, register product etc and it's only aud$284 for extra 2 years.

It kind of strikes me with all this warranty talk and concern, that it would in all probability actually cost more in shipping both ways US-AUS, than it would to just pay a US service agent to fix an issue.

Honestly, based on my experience with Sony projectors, I don't expect to ever need the warranty. I'm silly for even considering an extension.

If my experience is anything to add, 7 Sonys in 8 years(in 2 different install locations), none have ever broken down to date.

Congrats. Now someone has to start a VW80 owners/calibration thread.

thanks! the australia post tracking system is *ahem* a little slow. according to it "my item has arrived in brisbane and is ready for processing."

once i unbox it and attempt to set it up, maybe i'll start the VW80 thread. i'm definitely not qualified to answer any tech-savvy questions, so i might just leave the official owners thread to someone with more of a clue than i.

bytehoven, check your PMs.

LOL, glad I only have to rely on Australiapost tracking for incoming items sent by other post offices! Should have been reasonably cost effective by Air parcel or EMS at least. Courier will cost a fortunate by comparison.

Re US customs; I am still trying to work that out for the US and some other countries. In Australia these projectors are duty/tariff free, but we cannot assume duty free in the US. Can someone successfully search the US customs website to find out? Or call them to ask? 'LCD data projector'

I apologise to those who missed out this first batch. Sony concentrate on selling panels here in Australia and give little thought or planning on the projector side (it seems), hence the low stock levels. (they had only 10 in stock, I secured 9 of these, which will be here early next week, perhaps Wednesday) We will secure more stock in January and hope their prices don't go up too much.

Keen to hear if any duties are paid in the USA and Canada. Do they send out the item then invoice you weeks later? or do you have to pay up front before they release the goods? If we know how this works it should put some concerns to rest.... circumstances can you verify? Just read your email, glad it arrived safely!

I will notify everyone who has order is in our system with dispatch details next week : )

I ordered from Oz, too. tt cost me the same as a VW60 in Hong Kong. The MSRP in hong kong is close to US$8000. I think if I decided not to keep it and want a JVC 350/750 instead, I think I can sell it will some profit. Zero custom from Hong Kong. Hooray!

bytehoven, isn't the vw70 the same as vw80?? The MSRP looks pretty much the same. I think Sony used to call the HS51/a in the US and we have HS60 in Asia. Japanese companies have a track record of "naming" their model differently (e.g. Pioneer, JVC). May be it's for marketing or for some legal issues??

Stupid question here. it appears that the VW70 and VW80 are identical in terms of exterior dimensions/installation. Any evidence to the contrary?
