My RS20 review will be posted to the WSR Subscribers website sometime next week (I don't know which day yet). I normally spend 4-5 hours here on the forum doing a Q & A session immediately after a review is posted. This review has been delayed for while (for various reasons) so there are already several threads about the RS20. (As is my normal policy, I have refrained from making substantial comments about the RS20 while the review was in progress - but I'll have plenty to say soon!) So,

Question 1: Should I do a separate Q & A session thread for the RS20 review, or just drop into the 3 other RS20 threads and make comments from time to time?

Question 2: If I do a separate Q & A for the RS20 (or for other projectors in the future) would it be any easier for people to participate if I started a few hours later in the day than my usual noon PDT starting time?

Great news Greg!

I vote yes to question 1 and no to question 2 (simply because I'm in eastern time zone so noon PDT is 3:00 here anyway and I'm impatient enough).

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence

I prefer a new thread as it has always been.

I don't care about the time. I'll make time for it.

I prefer a new thread too.

I prefer 3:00 Pacific as I will be home from work at that time. But 12:00 works too (I'll leave work early)

New thread to avoid having to wade through all the other RS20 posts.

OK, a new thread it is. Thanks for the feedback.

I'll start a new thread for the review next week when I know what day it will be posted (probably Thursday or Friday to give WSR time to get the magazine page layout done). Hopefully enough people will participate to make it worthwhile! I'll prepare a couple of extra charts for the Q&A thread that are not in the review.

But I've been sworn to secrecy to not reveal the hidden service command that executes the fully automatic CMS calibration. --- ah, just kidding about that.

Thanks for planning to do this with your RS20 review. I am looking forward to both your review and your discussion.

I just renewed my WSR subscription. 2 years for $30 is a pretty good deal.

Greg,

Will you be posting the settings of your RS20? I am really interested in your settings of the CMS for both 709 and S-C. Thanks!

...anyone who renews a magazine for more that one year could be considered an optimist in these times.

Murphy (of Murphy's law) would be an optimist at this time.

I was told late today that WSR can't get it done until Tuesday (maybe even Wednesday). They are running behind getting the page layouts done for the next issue, and the review can't be posted until its page layout is completed. Sorry, but it's out of my hands.

Greg, if you have compared the old and new firmware please comment on whether it's beneficial to upgrade even if the CMS is not needed. There were claims of better native color balance so D65 can be achieved with brighter whites and more On-Off contrast.

Great question. I don't use the CMS (still using THX) but a nice side benefit for me w/ firmware upgrade is improved remote response.

I'm not sure what you mean by "better native color balance". The grayscale tracking is/was really good at the bright end and not bad out-of-the-box at the dark end - but you can also use the Custom gamma at the dark end to make it even better, although that doesn't impact the full-field contrast ratio. Basically you use the maximum red available from lamp and balance with the necessary green and blue to get D65. Firmware can't change the spectral content of the lamp or the dichroic filter response.

It's my interpretation of this claim here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2#post16385282
Mabye he meant something else, though. I know my RGB at 100 IRE on the RS20 is not well aligned when using a user preset and leaving eveything at default, respectively setting the color temperature to user and setting R G and B to zero correction. One channel measures quite some too high but as soon as we are down to 90 IRE or so it's the weakest channel.
