Ok then you should start with a basic Avia / DVE tuning, then put up a graysteps pattern, light grays/white to dark graybars. Find it in Avia or DVE. Study the color bias in the grays, first use the colortemp control to see which makes gray look steely gray with no color bias.

Next use the advance RGB gains and bias. RGB gains take color out of the white/bright grays, RGB bias takes the color out of the darker grays.

If you see red bias in the lights back off the red gain and increase the Blue and green gain equally till you see no color bias in the gray tone.

Once gray looks gray with no color bias your picture should look more natural toned.

Cheap way to try and fix it and nothing beats a pro with equipment coming out and making your 6500k gray balance go where it should be.
Good luck on your tweeking.

I have the NTSC version of DVE dated 2003. Is this okay to use for calibrating my 1080p PJ (HC8350)?

I have the 9700ub as well. I love this projector. I have been on the road so havent had time to tweak and/or play yet. I like the THX mode even in ambient light. I have a 1.1 gain white screen that I am in the process of upgrading. I watch a lot of sports with ambient light. I have a sample of the Da-lite HP material on the way.

Sorry Fraisa, my electric screen is mounted on an angle in the corner so a black diamond is a no-go for me.

once i get the HP material I will post some pics.

Yes it will work as long as you're upscladed over HDMI.
Down the road pick up the blu ray of DVE. When you run this you'll see the difference won't be noticable, still a good thing to have.

Hi fraisa,

I thinking of getting this projector, but the only thing stopping me is that I have not been able to find it on display anywhere. So I cannot see how it displays.

I've noticed that the picture on the new LED's and LCD Tv's have a over processed look. Movies tend to look cartoony to me.

Now on my Sanyo Z3 the movies look like movies. even when displaying Blurays at 1080i.

Does the Epson 9700 have that cartoony look like the led's?

Thanks

thanks for the reply.

Do you have anything you don't like about it?

I hate buying this without seeing it, but I can't find it anywhere to take a look.

Ill be joining ya soon fraisa. Im finishing my basement right now and trying to figure out what wires to run before drywall. Ive seen the 9700 about 20 times now and loooove how football looks on it. With sports, it blew a jvc 550 out of the water. The game looked alive on the 9700 and the same game on the same screen with the jvc almost made me sleepy. Im still debating on the screen, its been pretty hard to figure out. Im not close to any bd dealers, and have only seen the 9700 on a dragonfly 1.0 screen. So im leaning towards a carada ccw based on price and reputation. Fraisa what wires did you run for your setup? I have your typical 5.1 speaker setup, blu ray, etc. And thank you for all of your time and shots of the 9700 bd combo. Love em!!!

Yes I have it calibrated with the Avia disc. It really looks a lot better then those pics suggest. I will take more soon. i am waiting on some screen samples as well as I am considering painting my old screen with the silver fire 2.0. I need a replacement screen in place before i paint. I am going to buy the Da-lite HP or silver matte. I will then do some comparisons with that and the silver fire.

Cheers

OK, let me try a few more photos:

The pictures still dont do it justice. As for ambient light performance check this out. It is obvously very washed out directly next to the light.

and with just some background ambient:

way off axis:

My setup. rear shelf mounted:

Man my camera takes crappy pictures. I think its time for an upgrade there as well

one last one for the night.
