Good Day!

I do apologized that we haven't tested the brand of projector that you have (Sony vpl-vw90es- dalite high power) with our X103 Universal Glasses. We cannot also confirm if it would perform the same, better or worse than Sony Glasses and if it will require additional polarizing filter.

May we suggest to go with the brands tested by our engineers that will be compatible with our XpanD X103 glasses.

Thank you,
XpanD Technical Support
Yes, I will buy a display device based on the glasses...

According to my tests and others, the HP retains no polarization. I think it's very likely that the HP's tiny beads are going to render the polarization used in the projector and the glasses irrelevant.

If the quality of story and storytelling is arguable then how can it be a serious drama?
District 9 is a superior film in every way imho :P
I would like to see a real movie done in 3d. How about a war movie like Apocalypse Now or Saving private Ryan?

Maybe I'm the only one interested in seeing recreation of Shakespeare and other plays in 3d. Make it look like I'm watching a stage with depth.

Of course maybe the new generation will grow up loving spastic videogame movies. Too busy texting to really care about a good story anyways.

Avatar is a drama and it's theme is serious. It also has serious and poignant moments between its principal characters. In my book, that makes it a serious drama. The quality of the story and the storytelling of just about any film are arguable points. I think I could put together a cogent argument that Avatar compares in content, acting and execution to some classic films in American cinema history. (That doesn't mean I'd sincerely believe it, but I could do it. )

I agree with you completely about wanting to see things like Shakespeare in 3D. It's hard for me to imagine anything with more potential. Imagine some of the most powerful words ever written, delivered by a brilliant Shakespearean actor in a 3D film.

Now for the good news. My Sony has arrived!! I will pick it up tommorrow. Sony vs. Acer round 1.

I'm really anxious to hear some comparisons between that little Acer guy and the Sony and the JVC. Can't wait.

How big a screen are you running for the VW90ES and how close is the first row or seat to the screen?

My first 3D title I watch tommorrow will be.......

Magic Forest 3D. not making that up either, there is so much random stuff coming out that Im now past 40 3D titles. Pretty soon I gotta get picky and stop getting everything

I broke down and watched Avatar on the Acer, but Im looking forward to see how it looks on the Sony.

One thing I find strange about the Sony is that it lets you mess with depth and convergence on BD titles. Most TV's don't let you do this and both depth and convergence are predefined by the way the movie was made. I guess if people mess with these settings too much it can really mess up the 3D from how it was supposed to look. I will go indepth into all the 3D settings as I'm not a noob when it comes to 3D. I've had my nvidia monitor for over a year and my Acer projector for over 6 months. I also can't wait to try the 2d-3d conversion. It should be AWESOME for 2D games like Donkey Kong where you can easily set a foreground and background using the projector settings.

Im so excited. I hope my dreams aren't shattered tomorrow when I try it out

The Expendables looked and especially sounded terrific. Shadow detail, up close shots and blacks were excellent. When I get in this afternoon I plan to go over my latest favorite settings. For movies, sports and of course 3D...

Please be brutally honest.. I know the Sony is quite expensive and most owners are going to want the believe the 3D IQ is going to be notably better than the Acer given the enormous cost difference.

Since you've had the acer for 6 months, you know the pro's & cons, honeymoon should be over by now. What did you think of Avatar 3D on the Acer? I can't remember if you have an HP screen or not. It looks fantastic on my dalite screen, much brighter through the glasses than my local premiere imax theater.

A little update
I have now clocked over 50 hours on it with plenty of different material. The 2D is absolutely amazing on all aspects I can think of. While the 3D is very dim on my low gain screen, I have dialed some settings which I'm satisfied with. I now have 2 sets of settings, one for 2D, one for 3D.

2D:
Contrast : 80
Brightness : 50
Color : 53
Iris : Auto2 - Recommended
Gamma : Gamma-3
ColorTemp : Low1
Dark Frame : Off
MotionFlow : Off for films, High for games which run at 60fps

3D:
Contrast : 90
Brightness : 51
Color : 65
Gamma : Gamma-1
ColorTemp : Mid
Glasses brightness : medium
MotionFlow : Low

The Gamma boosts the perceived brightness, I'll see if I can make a better custom curve with the software. I found it works well to boost the color saturation to compensate for both the gamma and the low brightness in 3D. The sony glasses are very bad, I tested the ghosting with patterns, and it's highly variable over the surface of the glasses and the angle. I ordered a pair of X103, hopefully it's 50% increase in brightness will help until I get a high gain screen in the future, and hopefully they will have polarizers of a higher quality than on the sonys.

What bulb setting for each setting? Normal or High?

Thanks

High for both. I could use Normal for 2D, it's plenty bright, but there's almost no difference in sound level, it's just a little different pitch, but still equally silent. So I simply leave it at High all the time.

Opening between the second and third periods...actually, its pretty cold here tonight and it was on the UPS truck all day - I also did want to let it acclimate to room temperature for a few hours before powering it up.

I'm HOPING to snare a copy of Avatar 3D...it's that good?

Did you like it at a commercial theater? If so, you're going to love it at home. It looks better at home than at any of the 3D theaters where I saw it four times. I anticipated that my 3D@home experience would surpass my commercial theater 3D experience by a significant margin, just as 2D has for years. I have not been disappointed one bit.
