I was likely to be able to discover a sample in a finalized model with 80% of the SONY HW30ES, code name Hydra.

There is already a picture and huge amount of information in the excellent 30ES thread. This information is already posted there.
Perhaps you missed it?

Note: the first post has a nice picture of the 30ES.

Yes Hydra = 3D vwPro1 Replacement.

I hear a 3D vw85 is next for release at Cedia.

A replacement for the vw90 will come later, but no time frame.

Given that this is a first hand account by Kraine who will no doubt follow up with his usual thorough detailed review and may even answer questions I say leave this thread seperate.

To be both honest and speak frankly, I just went through a similar ordeal with an excellent Mitsubishi 4000 thread. The pros and cons were stated and many members and sites contributed.
Then one member started putting his name in a whole slew of new threads, which were already covered by existing threads. Finally he revealed his true intent that he was starting his own projector website and was essentially using AVS for free advertising. Isn't commercial use or intent against our rules?

Therefore I recommend that we stick with the balanced thread below until we start the Official Sony VPL-HW30ES Owners thread. Its already mid-June with a release date in July so there is little point in fragmenting the resource. Let new readers go to one place, then let owners (and reviewers) start sharing their experiences in the new thread.
I am on the interest list incidentally, but will graciously give some else the honor of starting that thread.
Thanks for listening.

Kraine thanks for posting the early preview. It's amazing how you guys always get first pick at the new projectors. The information is always top shelf and welcomed since you have seen so many different projectors.

There is no telling when it will actually be released, so this separate thread is perfect for those that have actually seen the projector vs. the continuous posting of press releases.

merci beaucoup!

I just hope the black level is 'at least' on par with the hw-20. Any guesses on native contrast? On the other thread I believe is was something like 9000:1 for the hw-20.

The hw20 had a max on/off contrast potential around 14K:1. I believe the vw30 will offer the same panel performance. We have to see what impact any optical block changes to support 3D (polarizers + higher intensity lamp)) have on performance.

I believe Sony has increased lamp output to compensate for optical block changes for 3D, but it's hard to say what this might do to 2D performance. 2D may be brighter, thus causing black levels to be elevated, so maybe black out conditions may not be as dark as the hw20. Even if you close the iris all the way down, a brighter lamp would cause slightly elevated lumen output, right? We'll have to see.

So, on/off & ansi contrast is probably similar.

Lumen output range for 3D, Increased.

Lumen output range for 2D also probably increased but impact unknown.

Kraine is a member of long and good standing, so I think it's fair to say if he was going to misbehave he would have done so by now.

Back to the pj, from the description it sounds like they might be duty-cycling the lamp by concentrating the same power in short bursts while the shutters are open.

This it might be the same average power with no increase in 2D brightness.

Also possible is that they are using higher power for 3D, but that it consumes the lamp electrode faster (which may also happen with the pulsed mode) and they only use it for 3D, with again no additional brightness for 3D.

Hi Noah, the HW30 Lamp isn't the same as the HW20, it's a new Lamp.

I believe you have the wrong member referred to in your response. Not that I agree or disagree either way with the OPs statement, I believe I know who he may be talking about.

Kraine is a good guy and has contributed much to AVS over the years. If he wants to start a thread, let him start a thread. What's the big deal? There is more good information here than in the other thread anyway.

Thanks, I think that tells me what I wanted to know, which is that this pj isn't likely to have the improved 2D brightness I was hoping for.

French and American (or is it that foreign English)?

Looks like sony has add a lot more presets. Is Cinema 1 closest to D65?

Also Kraine is there any Ethernet remote/command control (it has a port) or is it just for the 3D IR repeater?

Hi William,

It's only the 3D IR repeater, there is no ethernet command.

During the presentation I wasn't authorize to use my Meter to see if the different presets are close to D65, so you will have to wait my review of the final model.

Kraine - Hi, is there a 3 pin VESA connector for using an external IR blaster - or more important, using an RF transmitter like the Monster Vision 3D RF glasses?

I own these RF glasses for my JVS RS50 and would like to re-use them with the Sony. thanks!!

Why did Sony ship a pre-prototype 80% "mule" projector to France? It seems that a pre-prototype would be locked away in the R&D department and never see the light of day. Did Sony want it to be shown in this state or was in clandestinely smuggled out (or found in a bar )?
